The Game of Thrones in the Board Room
In the blockbuster television series Game of Thrones, one can learn a lot about human nature.
For anyone who has never seen any of the many episodes, this is a potential spoiler alert, but not about the show.
I have no intention of going into the details of the series, but rather the motives that drive the plot.
In the Game of Thrones, various families and others aspire to the mantle of power, to rule their world, and the worlds of others.
The story is peppered with intrigue, romance and to get to my point, honor, or lack of it.
Viewers over the years have probably had their favorite characters and seen their trials and tribulations, struggles, challenges, battles, defeats, deceptions, victories.
Within this community of characters lies several clues to who, what, why and how we morally support others based on their virtues.
Like the knights and great families of yesteryear, bravery, power, strength, all have their place on the menu of great leadership for us to consider today.
"Call me idealistic, but the rarest quality of all, then and now, is honor."
Amidst the ruthlessness of backbiting, conniving, trickery on the road to power, honor is the one that seems to shine.
It is a rare as a precious diamond. It also puts the one who possesses that virtue at risk amongst the devious, jealous, insincere, phony assortment of characters in the series and in life in the boardroom.
Perhaps today, more than ever, the “do as you say you will do’, when you say you will do it" is a significant part of what defines honor, to honor a promise that others know they can believe in.
The promises that give people faith and hope, instill pride, significance, that motivate them to trust beyond reason, is the new sacred brand of the leaders we seek.
Whenever honor, the commodity of trust, is anchored with a solid moral compass we call this integrity.
Taking a look at the captains of industry around the world, the line up of politicians today and the ones who are seeking the throne of the future, we are experiencing a famine.
We are starving for leadership integrity.
How can honor be sustained in a world full of paradoxes?
Perhaps just like the knights, they will require the combined skills of battle today to eradicate competition, overcome challenges and face adversity through ability, bravery, will of steel, vision.
However they will be doomed to fail unless they have assembled a team they can depend on around them, shield them, to enable them to produce and foster the most powerful secret ingredient of all.
Trust.
If this is their quest, mission and achievement, they could win the day, and the game with their own powerful family.
