Game Film Breakdown of one of My Keynotes
Here’s a game film breakdown of a portion of a presentation I did (for those speaking nerds out there like me scroll to the video at the bottom)
Background:
I was invited to speak to group of youth in California.
They don’t know who I am.
So I wanted to think on how I could capture their attention at the beginning of my presentation. But not just to capture their attention, but to capture their attention so they would be open to my message later on.
One question, I OFTEN ask myself is “What has my audience seen/heard a millions times before?” and how do I approach a subject in a way they haven’t experienced yet?
I don’t think it’s enough to ask “What do I want to say?” during my presentation, I also have to ask myself, what has my audience heard a million times? What is it that they expect someone like me to say? And how do I approach the topic from a new perspective?
If they think they know what I’m going to do or say, they will immediately tune me out.
The goal of this particular event was to help them “Unlock Your Personal Greatness”.
So I had to ask myself:
“How do I get their attention and get to look at what greatness means from a different perspective?”
Then I start by putting myself into the shoes of my audience. What do they believe greatness is now? What do they believe?
My hypothesis is that young people see people flexing on Instagram with tons of money and think making money is easy for everyone else (but themselves). They see people living the “good life” and then if they look at their own lives, they may feel they don’t match up. Which makes them feel like they can’t make it one day. This presentation needed to shift their perspective on that.
So what I wanted to do with this group is approach this perspective by addressing the difference between fact and fiction.
I knew about “Movie Money” which is the money that’s used in all music videos and movies to look like real money but it’s just paper. Totally worthless.
I believed most youth (heck most adults) probably don’t know this fact about movies and music vidoes.
So by first holding up the money, the visual of the money would get their attention. But if I ended there, the activity is pointless.
Then by ripping the money, it would REALLY get their attention.
Then by passing it around and letting them see it, they could see for themselves that it’s not real money.
Now by this point, I hope they are thinking to themselves “Wait, if this isn’t true, what else isn’t true? What else might not be as I think it is?”
Then I show them a little background of who I am and where I came from to show I know a little bit about what their individual story might be like.

Then I share an a-ha moment that money doesn’t make you a better person, it’s just a tool to give you more options.
By flipping the perspective of what money really is, it can flip it to something we use, not something that defines who we are.
This tee’d up the rest of the program to shift how they could see by utilzing the resources in their area, by showing up consistently they would have a huge advantage of people who did nothing except scrolled on social media. And it was a huge success.
Based on the feedback collected by Talkadot , AFTER a full day event,
100% of the participants found the talk valuable
98% want to hear me speak again
97.9% found it inspiring
97.5% found it actionable
97.5% found it interactive
97.1% found it engaging.
Those are not easy numbers to hit but when you
A) think of what your audience has already heard a millions times
B) approach how you want to tackle your topic in a way that would not sound like what they’ve heard a million times
C) understand your audience and use what you can to connect with their story to your story
Again, your message might be a foundational truth, but how you present that foundational truth is what matters most. It doesn’t always have to be the best way to present an idea that wins, it really just has to be a DIFFERENT way.
By using this approach you will set yourself up to be able to impact lives much more deeply.
And Talkadot can help you measure the difference you are making to know if you are moving in the right direction or not with your presentations. No need to leave it to guessing, leave it to data
