Game-Changing Self-Care Strategies for Moms, featuring Sophia A. Nelson, Esq., Author, Journalist and Speaker (EP 87)
Today, we delve into a topic that resonates deeply with every mother: self-care. And when we say self-care, we're not just talking about indulging in facials, massages, and girls' nights out, although those are certainly wonderful. We're talking about truly honoring ourselves, prioritizing our needs, and taking care of our well-being.
As mothers, we find ourselves constantly juggling countless responsibilities, from nurturing our children and managing our households to pursuing careers, whether inside or outside the home. Unfortunately, all too often, our own needs take a back seat in the process. However, it is very important to recognize that caring for ourselves is not only vital for our own well-being, but also for the well-being of our families.
When we are stressed, exhausted, and burnt out, it becomes incredibly challenging to show up as the best version of ourselves for our children. That's why I'm thrilled to have a special guest with us today to delve into the unique challenges that parents, particularly mothers, face when it comes to self-care.
To talk with me about this, I was so pleased to be joined by Sophia Nelson, Esquire—an accomplished award-winning author, journalist, and renowned international inspirational speaker. Ms. Nelson is a national columnist for major outlets such as the Washington Post and CNN Opinion. She also serves as a contributing editor to TheGrio. You may recognize her from her appearances on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS as a legal and political analyst. She is a sought-after diversity, equity, and inclusion trainer and speaker, having worked with Fortune 25 and Fortune 100 companies, as well as various influential platforms worldwide.??With four best-selling non-fiction books under her belt, including her latest release, Be the One You Need: 21 Life Lessons I Learned While Taking Care of Everyone , Ms. Nelson brings a wealth of wisdom and insights to our conversation today.
During our discussion, we not only addressed??the physical and logistical aspects of self-care, but also explored the mental barriers that often hinder us from prioritizing our well-being. So, here are just a few nuggets she shared that I believe are game-changing, self-care strategies for moms:?

Get out of the box.??Ms. Nelson emphasizes the importance of breaking free from the box that our families may have placed us in during our childhood. She acknowledges that our family, regardless of its nature, shapes and influences us, from our religious beliefs to our views on parenting, marriage, and relationships. However, she firmly believes that we don't have to remain confined within that box. While our upbringing serves as a foundation, it doesn't determine our entire journey.
Lean into the love and support of your village.??Children do not become successful and well-adjusted individuals by accident. It takes the love and support of a village, including parents, family members, and community elders. Love, along with active listening and dialogue, becomes the driving force behind shaping a child's future. Nelson also reminds parents not to shy away from their role as authority figures, teaching their children right from wrong and setting boundaries. While acknowledging the diversity of family structures, she emphasizes the importance of love, engagement, compassion, rules, structure, and boundaries in raising children. She believes that society has moved away from these essential aspects, and this shift poses a significant problem that needs addressing.
Set boundaries.??It is vital that you set boundaries and prioritize self-care. We communicate to others how we expect to be treated.??Mothers need to establish boundaries and communicate their need for personal time and space. Just as they allow their loved ones to have their own activities and time alone, mothers should assert their right to uninterrupted self-care. She emphasizes the importance of modeling how they want to be treated and showing up for themselves.
To help mothers in their journey of self-care, Ms. Nelson introduces a mindfulness exercise. She prompts mothers to ask themselves three essential questions, regularly. The first question is, "What do I want?" This question encourages self-reflection and exploration of personal desires and aspirations.??The second question is, "What do I need?" It requires a deeper level of introspection and acknowledges the importance of healing and addressing past trauma, disappointments, and exhaustion. The third question is a check-in with oneself: "How am I feeling?" This question encompasses both physical and mental well-being. It prompts mothers to assess their physical health, such as sleep quality, exercise, and potential warning signs of health issues. It also addresses emotional and mental states, including depression, anxiety, and overall emotional balance.??She emphasizes that these questions are life-changing and should be asked regularly, not just once a year.
