Game-Changing Lessons from the 2024 World Series: Insights for Business Success

It's been 43 years since the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers last met in the World Series. This year’s matchup featured the two best baseball teams: the Yankees and the Dodgers, who boasted the best record in the league, led by an unprecedented player who became the first in MLB history to hit 50 home runs while stealing over 50 bases, and a near triple crown winner in Aaron Judge. Truly remarkable feats. Here are five key lessons we can draw from this year’s unforgettable series.
1. Data and Analytics Matter
The Yankees were just one out from winning Game 1, a moment that could have changed the trajectory of the entire series. However, Dodgers star Freddie Freeman launched a 110+ mph home run off Nestor Cortes, turning the game around. In baseball, analytics play a huge role, and the stats were clear: Freeman, against left-handed pitchers with the bases loaded, had a career record of 9-for-14 with 4 home runs, 25 RBIs, and an astounding 2.238 OPS. In business, like in baseball, it’s critical not only to gather data but to trust it, using analytics to make informed decisions. Reflecting on Game 1, one could argue that Freeman’s success was predictable, as he went on to set a record for six consecutive home runs in World Series history. Managers, just like business leaders, should lean on data to make strategic choices that could shift the course of events.
2. The Value of a Good Closer
Alec Baldwin’s iconic line from Glengarry Glen Ross, “Always Be Closing,” applies as much to baseball as it does to business. Having a reliable closer—someone who can come in at the end of the game and secure the win—is crucial. In business, whether in sales or finance, closing skills can make the difference between success and failure. Just like Mariano Rivera in baseball, great closers are well-prepared and precise, capable of executing the final steps that seal the deal. In business, this means staying focused on the present, attending to details, and ensuring that today’s actions pave the way for future success.
3. Errors Are Costly
The Yankees were favored to win Game 5, especially with ace Gerrit Cole on the mound. They stormed to an early 5-0 lead, but the Dodgers scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning, largely due to defensive errors. Even the most reliable players can make mistakes, as evidenced by Aaron Judge’s rare misplay. In business, mistakes are inevitable but often carry significant costs, from financial losses to damaged reputations. Minimizing errors through thorough training and meticulous attention to detail can help businesses maintain continuity and manage risk. Companies that invest in their employees by providing regular training not only improve accuracy but also build resilience, reducing the potential for costly mistakes.

4. Preparedness Leads to Success
While “Cinderella stories” are exciting, it’s often the most prepared team that comes out on top. Facing a 0-3 deficit, the Yankees hoped to make history with a comeback, but the Dodgers ultimately proved themselves the superior team. Down by five runs in Game 5, they clawed back to tie and ultimately win, showing their tenacity and readiness to capitalize on any opportunity. The Dodgers’ success illustrates the importance of situational awareness and preparation, both on the field and in business. Manager Dave Roberts, facing limited bullpen options, relied on starting pitcher Walker Buehler, who was ready to step in for a save and secure the championship.
5. The Power of Preparation and Adaptability.
In business, as in baseball, preparation breeds success. Teams and companies that anticipate challenges, practice adaptability, and are ready to pivot are often the ones that thrive. Setting clear goals, executing plans, and learning to embrace challenges are essential to success. Working alongside people who share the same mission, vision, and passion reinforces team unity and commitment to a common goal. Leaders must be willing to make difficult strategic moves to drive success, all while adjusting to the ever-changing landscape. The 2024 World Series serves as a powerful reminder that resilience, preparation, and attention to detail make all the difference in reaching the top.
