A Game for the Ages

With Father's Day this weekend, what better time to chat about golf across generations of golf.
Consider this recent article from Joe Beditz, CEO of the National Golf Foundation.
"Unlike virtually every other sport, golf participation actually holds steady across the ages.... while skiing and tennis start off with slightly-higher participation rates, by the time people reach their 50s it’s no contest. Golf wins hands down." said Beditz.
The article goes on to elaborate that as these golfers age their spending habits far exceed snow sports and tennis. This is why the properties I consult and manage we emphasize teaching the game to youngsters as golf truly is the game of a lifetime.
I feel in broader since the real question is how do we keep them engaged after Mom & Dad have forced them to take golf classes in the first place?
It is my opinion, and take what you wish, but our objective as operators should be to make golf more relatable to their "needs". We know the younger generations are expecting instant gratification, it is often more about the socialize, and that the experience is paramount to their desire in doing something.
Again, my opinion the younger generations have no problem spending what money they have if it provides for the aforementioned "experience" at a perceived value. So how do we express value to this generation of consumer - it has to be made to relatable.
Example - we successfully marketed memberships at one club by relating the monthly dues as an equivalent to the monthly cost of their cell phone bill and other lifestyle items. Or, in some cases ... less! The net result ... fresh blood into a club membership that was waning.
The key is to get them engaged... place restrictions on when they play, if necessary, but as evidenced by Joe's chart above. You are not preparing for today ... but tomorrow.
