Role Playing Games Makes Up 60% of Korean Mobile Game Sales
New data from Sensor Tower highlights RPGs as a significant force in South Korea's mobile gaming market.
What’s Going On Here??
Recent data from Sensor Tower has shed light on the dominance of Role-Playing Games (RPGs) in South Korea's mobile gaming market, accounting for a substantial 60% of total sales. South Korea's influence in the gaming industry echoes globally, making these findings significant.
What Does This Mean?
When examining global mobile game sales by genre from January to August this year, RPGs commanded the highest share at 25.1%. In the same period, the Korean market boasted the third-highest share of global mobile RPG sales at 13.5%, following Japan and China's iOS. Remarkably, the proportion of RPGs in mobile game sales within Korea was significantly higher than other major markets.
Digging deeper into the Korean mobile RPG market from 2019 to 2023, Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) continued to lead, accounting for 69.5% of RPG sales in 2023. However, squad-based RPGs saw a substantial surge, registering a 39% increase in market share between 2019 and 2023. Games like Goddess of Victory: Nikke and Cookie Run: Kingdom fueled this growth.
Idle games also saw a notable rise, with a 159% increase in market share from 2019 to 2023, driven by titles like Legend of Slime: Idle RPG.

Why Should I Care?
These findings hold significance beyond mobile gaming, especially in the context of web3 gaming. As the web3 gaming landscape evolves, the diverse subgenres within RPGs serve as a microcosm of the broader industry.
For example, Fableborne by Pixion Games is an isometric play-to-own multiplayer game that combines Action RPG and Base Building elements, offering a unique gaming experience within the web3 space.
The growth of squad RPGs and idle games, fueled by character collection and innovative advertising strategies, foreshadows potential trends in web3 gaming, particularly on mobile platforms. The collaborative and decentralized nature of web3 gaming can leverage these trends to create distinctive gaming experiences and monetization models.
South Korea's mobile gaming scene, with its RPG preference, provides valuable insights for developers and enthusiasts venturing into the web3 gaming frontier. This data underscores the evolving nature of gaming preferences and highlights the potential for web3 gaming to further diversify and innovate within the RPG genre.
