Gallup’s Survey: People Choose Canada as The Best Country to Settle

Gallup a global analytics and advice firm?that helps leaders and organizations solve their most pressing problems. ‘Canada has emerged?as the most favored destination among potential immigrants,’?says Gallup based on a recent survey. The United States remains the top destination, but?Canada?has risen to the second spot for the first time in a poll by the global analytics firm.

In 2021, 900 million people expressed interest in permanently moving to another country, the highest recorded by Gallup since 2011. The number of people who wanted to relocate has increased from 12% to 16% between 2011 and 2021. Only the European Union and East Asia saw a decline in those wanting to leave their home country. The COVID-19 pandemic has not affected migration plans as demonstrated by the resurgence of migration after travel restrictions were lifted. The US saw a net international migration of over one million residents between 2021-2022.

More people are interested in Canada

In a survey conducted in 2021, 8% of those surveyed expressed their preference to?migrate to Canada instead of the United States. This trend has been growing over the last five years and started after Donald Trump became president and implemented anti-immigrant policies. Canada has gained popularity as a destination due to its welcoming attitude towards immigrants, robust economy, quality of life, and public healthcare system, because of this, an increase from 5% in 2011 to 8% of potential immigrants who stated they would prefer Canada over any other country. At the same time, immigrants’ preference for the US fell from 22% to 18%. Even at 8%, Canada is still the second-most popular country for immigrants. Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan all fall within the range of 3-7%. In Sierra Leone, where 76% of respondents indicated, they would consider leaving, the biggest percentage of persons expressed a desire to do so. Lebanon outperformed Afghanistan with a percentage of 63%, which was the second-highest figure. However, Latin America and the Caribbean saw a 19% rise in permanent migration between 2011 and 2021, which was the region with the biggest total growth. In Honduras, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic, more than 45% of respondents said they would immigrate if given the chance. The survey points out that there are differences between natives who would like to leave their home country versus the people who do it. Many people who want to immigrate are prevented from doing so by barriers including money, family, and work possibilities. As a result, they never leave their own country.

The Thriving Nation Seeks More Immigrants

Canada’s immigration policies?have made it an attractive destination for people seeking to immigrate, as the country is actively seeking to increase its immigrant population. This is due to several factors, such as an aging workforce, low birth rates, and a need for a large tax base to support essential social services like?healthcare?and?education. As a result, Canada releases an Immigration Levels Plan each year to set a target for the number of new permanent residents it plans to welcome. During 2022, Canada welcomed over 437,000 permanent residents,?this target is set to rise to 465,000 in 2023 and 500,000 by 2025. Canada must simplify its immigration procedures in order to process applications more quickly and accept even more immigrants if it is to fulfil these goals. This may create the impression that Canada’s immigration laws are less strict than those in other nations. To meet these targets, Canada must streamline its immigration process to allow for faster processing of applications and welcome even more newcomers. This perception may suggest that Canada’s immigration process is less rigid compared to other nations.
