You start with a feeling, it builds to an idea and then you start doing. It's not until you start doing that you realise if the idea in your mind has merit and what you feel is on track with your purpose and who you are and want to become. One of my inspirations is the work of Hilma af Klint which is like 'a library of ideas'.
I'm quite a visual person and at any particular time, what I create reflects what I'm trying to express. It's about the story. It becomes another chapter in the journey.
Where this leads me is to encourage you to look back over your posts and reflect on them like an art gallery.
" Be they articles, blogs, tweets or otherwise, your posts are a gallery of your mind in word and pictures."
When you walk into the vestibule of a gallery you'll first see a few pieces of art to entice you, a number of large posters advertising different exhibitions and then tantalising glimpses of paths leading you to different display galleries. Each one focussed on a particular era, culture, genre, period or artistic personality. Usually, there's a map showing which gallery displays what so you can make your way to what is currently interesting you most. However, you may find it necessary to travel through other galleries to get there. I also like to leave some time to wander through others as it can be quite surprising what catches your eye.
Even in the world of corporate, as an artist, I decided I would use my own photographs, paintings and drawings as backdrops to my gallery of posts as they represent the places and spaces I've experienced. Where I don't feel they express what I'd like to say at the time, I happily search out the art and words of others to share. After all, our journey does cross paths with others and the experience of meeting them or their work does leave a mark on us be it of great or small influence. In addition to that, you may find yourself in an unexpected yet happy collaboration as a result.
In a mindful way, look over your gallery. Instagram comes to mind firstly for its simple visual layout but ensure you look across all of your channels. What you'll note first is the consistency or the changes of tone, colour and subject matter. Of even greater interest is the shifts in emotion, thought and behaviour as a result of seeing it outside of yourself. In digesting the response of others, which may not necessarily reflect what you intended, is of great value to you in widening your understanding and perspective. It would be exhausting to feel and think the same way all the time no matter how negative or positive the emotion. Remember, we are not the emotion. We have emotions and respond to them.
How do you feel, think and respond when you see your storyline?
Answer the following questions and it will give you a good indication if you're living your purpose and if not, where and what you'd like to shift into a better space.
- What part of your storyline does each display gallery or time reflect? (eg. era, culture, genre, period or personality)
- Is it true of you in the time when you created it?
- Is it still true now?
- Does it represent who you are, how you're evolving and who you want to become?
Keep exploring, keep sharing your experience and the stories that help others.
If you're willing to share, I'd very much like to know your response to this article.
