Perspective is everything! Within the first chapter of my book, The Power of Strategic Influence, I noted some foundational criteria for establishing a perspective before starting a new journey. I like to think of perspective in terms of “Establishing a Survival Mindset,” or committing to the idea that with the proper mindset and perspective you can handle anything that life throws at you. Using this as our groundwork, let me share Five Guideposts of perspective impact.
5 GUIDEPOSTS TO POSITIVELY IMPACT LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE
PERSPECTIVE GUIDEPOST 1: ENVISION THE HORIZON TO GAIN A PERSPECTIVE.
Anyone who has read my books, knows that I like to use nautical metaphors to represent business concepts and methodologies. With this in mind, imagine an old-fashioned sailing ship getting ready to sail. To gain a perspective in navigating a ship to a certain destination, the very first thing you’d do is send a sailor high into the crow’s nest to search the horizon and gain a perspective. It’s important to understand and be aware of both the opportunities and the threats you may encounter along your journey. If you don’t have a perspective of what is over the horizon and no map to guide you, you could end up anywhere and have little control over the outcome. Sailing aimlessly from here to there without being mindful of the passage of time is not a winning strategy. Success takes perspective, planning, and a team of experts to achieve great heights.
PERSPECTIVE GUIDEPOST 2: IDENTIFY THE WHAT.
Before beginning a new project, or especially the process of self-mastery, it’s pertinent to assess WHAT is compelling you to do this? In other words, take time to identify and specify the source of inspiration/light and motivation (again the what) behind your objective.
PERSPECTIVE GUIDEPOST 3: ASSESS THE PURPOSE.
Assess the purpose (OR THE WHY) that is driving you to toward your project. Years ago, I coined the phrase, PERSONAL DRIVING FORCES which equates to purpose. And yes, I meant to make the concept of purpose plural. There should absolutely be a specific purpose, or driving force, leading to perspective for each and every goal you have to motivate you when things get cloudy and challenging.
PERSPECTIVE GUIDEPOST 4: UNDERSTANDING THE CURRENT PLAYING FIELD.
Before venturing into the unknown, take the time to assess who has already made progress in terms of the objective, idea, or project you are undertaking. In other words, get a lay of the land prior to beginning the process which will give you a perspective of understanding. For example, if you want invent a new type of car that can fly, you wouldn’t begin from scratch, you would first evalulate the existing technology to see what has already been accomplished, what didn’t work, and what obstacles need to be overcome to create a better solution.
PERSPECTIVE GUIDEPOST 5: RESEARCH TO GAIN A PERSPECTIVE OF CONFIDENCE.
On a leadership level, if you want to become an expert at innovation, first learn to research the innovators (past and present) who have or are attempting to disrupt the aviation industry with flying cars and then bring together the best minds available to help you both create a vision and a constructive plan to accomplish your goal. Research will give you a perspective of confidence, will lower the risk of failure, and help you to learn valuable insights of that playing field already mentioned. As I teach about self-mastery in my book, Become a Super Leader, “Effective learning happens in two ways: by continuous accumulated experience and deliberately acquired knowledge.” Be deliberate in your research. This will provide the necessary leadership perspective, leading to success and mastery.
SUMMARY:
Think of perspective as, "Establishing a Survival Mindset."

From my book, The Power of Strategic Influence, on the topic of Vision, or gaining an Effective Perspective, I share the following: “A vision must have full transparency, and be shared with everyone, to be effective. To have any value, you, the leader, must ensure it’s promulgated, and that every stakeholder—employee, investor, vendor, and customer—either knows it or can easily access it. This will motivate your employees to work for a common goal, inform your investors of your goals and intentions, and educate your customers about the choice they make while buying your product or service.”
Next, planning for success is about gaining a Perspective, that will help you identify a Purpose. Purpose is about assessing your personal driving forces. These are the elements required to develop motivation that will drive you and keep you moving forward when challenges arise. To create staying power in your career and/or business, you must determine what motivates you.
Finally, preparing through research, learning towards the goal of self-mastery, it can give you the perspective edge, reduce the risk of failure, and a boost to move forward with confidence.

2 个月Without perspective you are sailing blind and can’t see the horizon. Love the metaphors Gary C Laney. Early in my career I thought I knew where I was going but frequently found myself in the middle of nowhere until I got my bearings and could continue the journey. I now have a clear map of the territory and the sailing has become a lot smoother and the horizon is that much closer to discover what’s beyond it.
