The good old times

?My son asked me last year: “Dad, when were the good, old times?” I did not have to think a long time, and answered him: “Before the pandemic, my son.”

The pandemic has increased our stress levels, anxiety and made us to worry. All you need to do in the morning is to read the latest news to trigger of the anxiety response. Worry and scary thoughts fill up your mind.

Many of us have an internal critic and complainer in our mind, which fuels negative thinking and low performance. If you are too stressed and think negatively, you lose focus at work and you are not reaching your full potential.

In October 2020, I was totally fed up with the pandemic, as the situation got worse and worse in Finland. I was worrying, complaining and feeling bad and pessimistic 24/7. One day, I realized that I cannot continue thinking and feeling bad all the time, because I just ruin my day and other people’s too. I had to change my perspective and attitude. Accordingly, I started reading books and listening to audio books about self-management, psychology and how the mind works.

I discovered how I can fine-tune my thinking and overcome continuous negative self-talk. You too can conquer stress, worry, fear and other negative thoughts and feelings.

How?

By gaining the crucial three insights to power up yourself and you fire up LinkedIn too.

First, I will present you the basis of the three insights.

The basis of the three insights?

First basis is the stoic philosophy.

Stoic philosophy is based on the concepts of the ancient Roman philosophers. Stoic philosophy emphasizes use of reasoning and logic to overcome challenges of life and to make virtuous decisions. Stoic thinkers advice you to distinguish things that you can affect and the things that you cannot affect. Your career situation, habits and thoughts are examples of the former and the pandemic, natural disasters and your age are examples of the latter. The stoic philosophers teach us to focus on the things we can influence.

The second basis is humanism.

Humanism is a worldview based on humanity, and this cultural flow rose with the Renaissance in the Western countries. As a philosophy, humanism signifies tolerance and universal humanity. A humanist has a belief in personal potential, development and growth.

The third basis is the solution-focused approach.

A solution-focused approach (SFA) is a down-to-earth and positive way to face various challenges and dilemmas in human life. SFA is being used in therapy and in personal and business coaching too.

Solution-focused practice focuses on helping people move towards the future that they want and to learn what they can do differently by using their existing skills, tactics and ideas and looking ahead.

When applying this approach, you need to recognize the problem, but your focus should quickly shift to your personal goal and the steps to reach that goal.

Now we are ready to power up your thinking!

After laying the foundation for the three insights, let me present you the first insight.

1. Insight: Don’t moan, be grateful

In a recent talk at TEDx San Francisco, Mel Robbins, a self-help author, mentioned that scientists estimate the probability of your being born at about one in 400 trillion, i.e. the odds of you being alive at all are basically zero.

It is easy to see what is wrong with life. When you are tired or in a bad place or have failed it is too easy to start moaning. However, does the world need more whining?

When you feel the need to wail, remember that you have won the impossible jackpot of being born and being alive and kicking. Change the focus to positive: reflect on the good things of your life. When a worry thought hits your mind, replace it with a gratitude thought.

Be grateful. Keep a gratitude diary. In the evening, list three things that you can be thankful for in life.

How you can apply the first insight in leveraging LinkedIn?

???Even if you seem to be in a dark place, don’t complain about the situation in your career path. Roll up your sleeves and start studying how to power up LinkedIn.

???Don’t whine on LinkedIn. Be a beacon, not a dead battery.

???Post positive, educational and entertaining content on LinkedIn.

???Engage (like, comment, share) in a positive way.

???Show that you appreciate every invite, message and comment you get.

2. Insight: Don’t criticize, give positive feedback

Leave everyone you meet better than you found them.

- Robin Sharma

Being overtly critical poisons your mind. Social media is full with negative, even hateful posts. Try to see the best in people, events and the world.

When you need to give feedback to people, such as your children or co-workers, always start with positive feedback. Instead of first seeing the negative, the error, see the positive. When you give constructive feedback do it by asking: “Did you notice that…” or “what could you do differently next time in that situation?” Trust in the potential of others.

When you need to give instructions: Please do X because…i. e. always give a reason to motivate the person.

How you can apply the second insight in leveraging LinkedIn?

???Don’t criticize, see the good in others

???Give praise, compliment and credits to people in your network

???Be grateful of all advice and coaching you get on elevating LinkedIn in your business

???Don’t spare your thanks, e.g. always thank the people who have tagged you in their posts.

?3. Insight: Don’t be afraid, be optimistic

What do the elders regret?

According to the studies, they regret things they have done and things they have not done or tried. However, they also regret that they have worried too much.

Dr. Martin Seligman has studied pessimistic and optimistic thinking for decades. His research shows that optimists are happier, healthier, live longer, more social, succeed better in all areas of life and even earn better than pessimists.

What we can learn from the elders and Dr. Seligman? Stop worrying too much, and especially stop worrying beforehand – e.g. during the dark hours of the night. If needed, I remind myself: “the night is for sleeping, not for worrying.”

In the darkest hours of my life, the Persian adage “This too shall pass” has helped me be resilient and push forward.

Be optimistic: dare to dream, set goals and focus on them – every day.

How you can apply the third insight in leveraging LinkedIn?

???You can study social selling to reach your professional or business goals.

???Don’t be shy to post your content

???Hope for the good things in leveraging LinkedIn, and except gold!

???Keep your eyes on your business or professional goal.

???Be consistent and you’ll thrive!

In Summary: those are my three insights to make your good life amazing and help you leverage LinkedIn to reach your goals, but what are your key insights? Did I miss something? What kind of fine-tuning in your thinking changed YOUR life? Let me know in the comments. I cannot wait to hear your insights!
