Gain the confidence to open, click and trust everything in your inbox

Even with the rise of platforms such as Slack and Microsoft Teams, email is still the essential business communication tool. Estimates put the number of business emails sent and received at just under 300 Billion for 2019, increasing to an estimated 345 Billion by 2023. With the benefits that email brings to further effective communications, within and between organisations, also come some risks.

Protecting Your Brand

Everyone is aware of the need for effective anti-malware, anti-virus, and protection from phishing attacks from outside of an organisation. However, have you ever considered the effect on your organisations brand and reputation if malicious actors co-opt your email and web domain name to pretend that an email is from your trusted staff? This is known as email spoofing.

Think of the repetitional implications if an email pretending to come from your organisation was opened, and a link to a malicious site clicked. The receiving business could block your email domain, or in extreme cases, your domain name could be blacklisted by Internet security companies.

Many organisations use Extended Validation (EV) certificates with their domain names to provide an enhanced level of trust for people accessing their web sites. Is there a similar way to ensure confidence in emails sent using an organisations domain name?

DMARC can protect your email domain and brand

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is an open standard email authentication protocol. It provides owners of domain names with the ability to protect their domains from unauthorised use.

When DMARC is implemented to protect an email domain from unauthorised use, it prevents malicious third parties using the domain for email spoofing to launch phishing attacks, distribute Malware, and other cybersecurity threats under the guise of a trusted email domain. DMARC extends the existing SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) to add checks in DNS to ensure mail is from the domain it claims to be from. This includes protection against lookalike domain use; for example, google versus goog1e type substitutions (were the ell in this case is replaced by a one.)

DMARC.org is an industry standard with well-known players such as Google, PayPal, Comcast and Agari as founding members.

The Agari Solution

In addition to being a founding member off the DMARC.org industry group, Agari provides solutions to automate the adoption and implementation of DMARC within organisations. Agari simplifies the process of selecting which email senders can send on your behalf. The solution also reduces the tasks associated with maintaining the authorised list by using smart analytics combined within a fully hosted platform and tried & tested business email practices.
