Gagne's Nine Elements of Learning

Gagne's Nine Elements of Learning

It has become more prominent for educators to have an "outstanding" planning for learning to keep-up the effectiveness of the lesson. Plan, Plan & Plan is the base to develop the "Growth Mindset" among our learners. Implementation of the plan is also as important as planning.

Beforehand developing a plan, it helps to be decide SMART objectives about what learning actually means. Educators interpret learning to be new:

  1. Knowledge is information that will be useful somehow, for example, in solving a problem, achieving a goal or otherwise accomplishing something important in life.
  2. Skills are developed by applying the new knowledge over time.
  3. Abilities are intuitive capacities developed by applying the skills over time.

How do I develop a Learning Plan?

Developing a Learning Plan requires that you:

  1. Identify a Learning Goal, the Competency (core or general) to be developed or work objective to be achieved;
  2. Identify the learning experience needed to develop that ability; and
  3. Identify the support required to develop and apply that ability.

Gagne's Nine elements of learning outline the criteria required for the effective learning. When all elements are included in lessons they ensure that students get the most from their learning opportunities. Check out the below video to understand the importance of this model in the blended or hybrid learning environment.

Gagne's nine elements of learning can help you to build a framework to prepare and deliver instructional content while considering and addressing conditions and requirements for learning. Ideally, you should prepare course goals and learning objectives before implementing the nine elements—the goals and objectives will help situate the events in their proper context. The nine elements of instruction can then be modified to fit both the content and students’ level of knowledge.

According to Gagne learning doesn’t have to be an all-in-one experience. A few drops of information are much more impactful than a whole flood pouring down on you at once. His Nine Elements of Learning model has been used as a successful template for training educators, trainers and students all over the world since its conception by marrying it up with our modern learning solutions.
