As India assumes its leadership role within the G20, it stands at a critical juncture in shaping global economic and development priorities. Representing a major emerging economy, India's participation in the G20 offers a unique opportunity to advocate for inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and sustainable development on the international stage. However, it is essential to overcome internal challenges and chart a cohesive vision to make a genuine impact on the world stage.
The G20, comprising 19 major economies and the European Union, wields substantial influence, accounting for 85% of global GDP and two-thirds of the world's population. It serves as a crucial platform for economic cooperation and decision-making on pressing issues like financial stability, trade, and climate change. As a key participant, India's voice carries significant weight, enabling it to influence policies and actions with far-reaching global implications.
India's ambitions within the G20 are commendable, focusing on sustainable economic growth, climate action, and infrastructure development. Its unique perspective as an emerging economy adds valuable dimensions to the discussions and deliberations. However, critics question the plausibility of these ambitions, pointing to India's socially fractured and immature polity, which can impede decisive action.
The 'Make in India' policy, aimed at bolstering the manufacturing sector, is a step towards self-reliance and global recognition. Nevertheless, achieving sustained manufacturing growth of 15-16% annually to create 100 million jobs is a challenging task. India must address the hurdles posed by its heavy reliance on the informal manufacturing sector and ensure a cohesive strategy to drive meaningful progress.
Furthermore, India's international diplomacy and partnership engagement requires a clear national vision. While the current government demonstrates assertiveness in addressing adversaries and exercising power, it is crucial to integrate these efforts into a comprehensive approach. Harnessing India's national resources effectively and adopting a coherent strategy will pave the way for meaningful progress and global recognition.
India's historical setbacks may have influenced its cautious approach, seeking solace in small achievements and external recognition. However, this low threshold of national self-esteem must be transcended to make bold strides on the global stage.
