Mega Projects: How can you reduce how they impact your Recruitment?

With the rise of "Giga-Factories" and huge multi-billion pound investments by the Tech giants, the inflated rates and sheer scale of the resources needed to deliver these projects can have a disastrous impact in already candidate short areas, acting like a "talent sponge". The knock-on effect is far-reaching, with neighbouring projects that require the same skills ending up in a bidding war over an ever-decreasing talent pool. This raises the question: How do you best protect yourself from this when you need the same people?

Let's consider the kind of skills that will be most affected by this kind of disruptor: Highly skilled Engineering and Tech workers, usually in "hands-on" roles where their specialist knowledge means they are fundamental to the progress and completion of key areas of the project. A good example of this would be Automation, which is at the heart of every manufacturing facility, both operationally and technologically. With each vendor using their own bespoke software, unfortunately, not every Automation Engineer can work on every automation project. They must be able to work with the correct software and equipment, and here lies the problem. However, the only solution is to do something different from your competition.

With big projects come big budgets, but also a real risk of considerable financial mismanagement. This often means that they are procurement leads, with the core focus being cost management, and this includes Recruitment. This allows ownership of the recruitment process, selection of suppliers, and ultimately, the final say to sit with the project and technical leads.
