SPORTS INDUSTRY NEWS ROUND-UP
This past week has been a whirlwind of excitement in the world of sports, highlighted by plans for major events and intriguing stadium developments. During this week's Euros Qualifiers, both Wales and Northern Ireland were knocked out; however, England and Scotland successfully secured spots in the 2024 tournament. Additionally, the Cricket World Cup reached its conclusion, with Australia seizing the spotlight, outshining India in front of 92,000 Indian fans.
Events
·??????? Heavyweight boxers Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will finally clash in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 17th February.
·??????? The heavyweight rivals were expected to meet on 23rd December only for Fury’s disappointing performance in a split-decision victory over mixed martial arts (MMA) star Francis Ngannou last month to force a delay.
·??????? Fury’s World Boxing Council (WBC) belt and the World Boxing Association (WBA), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles held by Usyk will be on the line with the winner crowned the division’s first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000.
·??????? Bid on course to receive necessary support and financial guarantees.
·??????? Government set to examine conditions for providing the necessary state assurances to conduct the Winter Games.
·??????? Estimated that between 150,000 and 175,000 tourists would visit Sweden for the event.
·??????? Government-commissioned studies also project that more than SEK1 billion (US$92 million) could be generated.
·??????? More than 6,000 participants will compete in 53 different competitions including volleyball, basketball, and weightlifting.
·??????? There will be 21 competitions hosted at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Olympic Complex while four will be held at Al-Nasr Club hall. Other confirmed venues are Riyadh Club track, Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz Sports City, King Saud University, and Riyadh Golf Club.
·??????? The event is due to begin on Nov. 26 and will run until Dec. 10.
Commercial
·??????? The Fifa is set to net a lucrative sponsorship deal with Saudi Arabia state-owned oil giant Aramco, according to The Times.
·??????? Aramco will become one of the organisation’s top-tier partners, with a contract lasting until 2034 – the same year Saudi Arabia is expected to host the men’s World Cup.
·??????? By that point, the arrangement is expected to be worth up to US$100 million a year.
·??????? Arsenal are not planning to cancel their Visit Rwanda sleeve sponsorship deal, despite the UK’s Supreme Court ruling that the government’s Rwanda asylum policy is unlawful.
·??????? The Gunners first teamed up with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in 2018, with the pair inking a four-year extension worth UK£40 million (US$49.6 million) in 2021.
·??????? The Premier League club maintains that the tie-up is about promoting tourism in a developing country, rather than supporting the country’s political leadership.
·??????? Formula 1 team Red Bull Racing is in advanced negotiations with international financial services company JP Morgan Chase about a sponsorship agreement.
·??????? The American financial services firm is close to agreeing a deal that would focus on its global investment banking arm, JP Morgan, and a January 2024 announcement is planned if the two parties can come to an agreement.
·??????? The proposed move would expand JP Morgan Chase’s F1 involvement. The JP Morgan brand is already a Founding Partner of the Miami Grand Prix in a contract which began in 2022, while its Sapphire credit card brand is listed as an Event Supporter for the race.
Women’s Sport
·??????? Nike stays on as official apparel partner for all Australian national soccer teams, including the Socceroos, Matildas, junior and youth men’s and women’s squads, as well as the Pararoos, and ParaMatildas.
·??????? Deal also includes specific funding for the ‘Legacy ’23’ strategy, as well as grassroots participation and inclusivity programmes.
·??????? In August, Nike said there had been “record breaking” demand for the Matildas jersey, with this year’s outselling the 2019 Fifa World Cup’s edition 13 to one.
·??????? The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) has signed a two-year title sponsorship extension with financial firm CME Group for the Tour Championship, which will offer an increased prize purse.
·??????? Winner to receive record US$4 million, with the runner-up taking home US$1 million.
·??????? Enhanced purse distribution formula will see every competitor who qualifies for the 60-golfer field be awarded at least US$55,000.

·??????? The creation of a new independent company to oversee the Women’s Super League (WSL) and Women’s Championship is in doubt after clubs from the second division voted to reject its proposed funding and governance structure.
·??????? A majority of Championship teams have voted to oppose the establishment of ‘NewCo’, a new body that would run both leagues independently.
·??????? The organisation would have been funded by a UK£15 million (US$18.8 million) loan, most likely to be distributed by the Football Association (FA), with the Premier League considered less likely to provide the funding.
Stadiums & Venues
·??????? New York City FC is planning on building the first fully electric stadium in Major League Soccer (MLS), with a number of sustainability features to be integrated into the design of the 25,000-seat venue.
·??????? The design and building of the stadium will place a focus on renewable energy, with an array of solar panels to be installed on the roof to maximise energy generation.
·??????? A water harvesting system would also be fitted below the pitch to capture rainwater which can be reused for irrigation. Water-efficient systems, including dry urinals, proximity-controlled taps and reduced water mix taps and shower heads will further reduce unnecessary consumption.
·??????? PSG would consider adding a roof and a retractable pitch to the Parc des Princes as part of an ambitious expansion project.
·??????? The stadium is owned by the City Council of Paris and PSG would need to acquire the venue in order to carry out any major renovation work.
·??????? Expansion of the Parc des Princes could increase the capacity of the stadium to 60,000. PSG is said to be in talks with Pierre Ferret and Populous over the potential design of a revamped Parc des Princes.
·??????? Elland Road, home of Championship football club Leeds United, will host rugby league’s Magic Weekend for the first time next year.
·??????? The event, which sees an entire round of Super League fixtures take place at one venue over two days, will take place on August 17-18. Elland Road will become the sixth venue to host the Magic Weekend since the concept was launched in 2007.
·??????? Seven of the last eight Magic Weekends have been held at St. James’ Park, home of Premier League club Newcastle United. The exception was in 2019, when Liverpool’s Anfield stadium hosted.
Technology
·??????? Vide Integrated payments and commerce technology company Shift4 has partnered with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium.
·??????? Shift4 will serve as the Dolphins’ payment processor for ticket sales, with the company’s technology to power secure ticketing transactions for Dolphins games and numerous Hard Rock Stadium events through its recently announced integration with Ticketmaster.
·??????? The roof of the SoFi Center, the venue for TGL built on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Florida, collapsed overnight after a power outage caused deflation and damage to its air-supported dome section.
·??????? TGL was due to launch in January but will now start in 2025.
·??????? The TGL is a made-for-TV golf league from Woods and McIlroy's TMRW Sports venture, with the pair among the 24 PGA Tour players committed to competing.
·??????? German software company SAP has agreed a new partnership with Mercedes-AMG Petronas, which the two parties state has the potential to “create a new blueprint” for the automotive industry, while US communications platform WhatsApp has stepped up its association with the Formula 1 team.
·??????? The partnership will give Mercedes access to innovations that will in effect be proof tested before they gain wider use.
·??????? SAP’s AI technologies will allow Mercedes to forecast costs relating to the new F1 financial cap.

Australia win Cricket World Cup after beating India by six wickets in final
·??????? Rohit Sharma's India side were favourites going into the final with the vast majority of the 92,453-strong crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium backing India, but a brilliant century from Travis Head ensured the now six-time champions cruised to victory with seven overs to spare.
·??????? Few would have predicted that captain Pat Cummins would end up lifting the trophy after Australia lost their first two games of the tournament.
·??????? However, they proceeded to win nine in a row to continue Australia's remarkable record in this competition.
Global13 Update
Project Associate Max has been leading the charge with Global 13's Movember Challenge, while Olivia has accumulated kilometers despite her hectic pre-season schedule. Eddie's Clapham Rovers, lost their latest Southern Sunday League game but are aiming to bounce back this weekend in the Cup.
