SPORTS INDUSTRY NEWS ROUND-UP
It has been an exciting week across the sports industry, with new commercial deals being struck as well as some big events news. The Lionesses' made history by progressing to a first World Cup Final for an English side since 1966. The Challenge Cup finals were hosted at Wembley last weekend, with Leigh Leopards claiming victory in the men's competition and St Helens taking home the trophy in the women's final.

·?????? The decision to terminate the bid, which would have involved the cities of Calgary and Edmonton, comes just weeks after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from hosting the 2026 event over similar concerns.
·?????? Alberta’s Tourism and Sport Minister Joseph Schow estimated the price tag to be up to CAN$2.68 billion, a bill which would have been largely landed at the feet of taxpayers.
·????? The final of rugby league’s Challenge Cup will remain at Wembley Stadium for the next two years, with the 2024 event to revert to an earlier slot in the calendar.
·????? Next year will see the men’s and women’s finals take place on June 8. The announcement was made on Saturday ahead of this year’s finals at Wembley.
·?????? Commenting on the new two-year deal with Wembley, Rhodri Jones, managing director of Rugby League Commercial, said: “We are pleased to be able to confirm that Betfred Challenge Cup Finals Day will be played at Wembley Stadium in each of the next two years and will be returning to an earlier position in the season in June.
·?????? The new tournament will initially be invitational and the AFC has not confirmed the total number of teams
·?????? AFC confirms all member associations would receive an invitation to participate.
·?????? “The AFC Women’s Champions League is a major step aligned with our strategy to provide a platform to showcase the talent of women players on a continental stage” said Shaikh Salman, AFC president.

·?????? German soccer champions Bayern Munich have become the latest team to partner with Prime, the sports drinks brand founded by social media influencers ‘KSI’ and Logan Paul.
·?????? Prime is set to become the official isotonic partner in a multi-year deal and the drinks brand will be sold exclusively at the Allianz Arena on match days.
·?????? Bayern-branded prime limited-edition bottles are set to be launched in the German market this year.

·?????? Canadian bank retains title sponsorship rights to the heritage and Canadian open for 2024
·?????? The deal is set to run for a year and will cost the Canadian bank $25 million dollars for the title sponsorship rights.
·?????? Riyadh Air’s logo to feature on the front of Atletico’s men’s first team kits.
·?????? The deal is worth 40 million Euros per season and will run through the 2026/27 campaign.
·?????? Riyadh Air was founded earlier this year and is owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, this is the airlines first sports sponsorship deal.

·?????? The prize fund for this year’s tournament has increased by 23% to US$9 million
·?????? AIG stated that the extension would reinforce its commitment towards striving for ‘gender pay equity’, with the tournament’s prize pot having increased since the company became title sponsor in 2019.
·?????? The Tournament Champions are now set to earn US$1.35 million.
·?????? The Women’s National Basketball Association’s (WNBA) Dallas Wings have announced a jersey patch sponsorship deal with the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Dallas Mavericks.
·?????? Logo of the Mavericks’ Gilrs Empowered by Mavericks (GEM) program will feature on the Wings’ jerseys.
·?????? Multi-year agreement to also see wings players and coaches integrated into year-round GEM programming.
·?????? This is the first partnership between a WNBA team and NBA franchise belonging to different ownership groups.
·?????? The acquisition will see DAZN further consolidate its women’s football offering, adding to its extensive rights portfolio that include the global rights to the UEFA Women’s Champions League snd both the domestic and international rights to Germany’s Frauen Bundesliga

The commission, agreeing with a?previous decision by the superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape that ruled that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza’s second tier assumes protected status in 2025 when it will have been in situ for 70 years.
