Futuro Antico [Ancient Future]
Juan Mu?oz-Oca
Estates Director & Chief Operating Officer, Marchesi Antinori | Business Leadership | Learning from the past, looking forward to a great future
It’s not everyday that you realize you are part of something bigger, that you’re one of many who collectively have built something incredible and realize that your vision and values perfectly align with those of the people around you.
As harvest 2023 is in full swing here in Napa, I wanted to take a minute to reflect on what it means to be part of Antinori, and what it means to be a small part of continuous winemaking since 1385.
A deeply rooted, iconic, and historic winemaking pedigree carries with it a rich tapestry of tradition. It’s like having access to a treasure trove of knowledge and techniques that have been honed and perfected over generations, 26 to be exact. These foundations provide a solid footing, much like the roots of a 50 year-old vine at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ historic FAY vineyard, allowing winemakers to craft wines with a unique sense of place and history.
But what truly makes this pedigree remarkable is the way it harmoniously blends with the anticipation of a bright future; my Italian colleagues have found the perfect phrase to describe that philosophy “Futuro Antico”

In the world of winemaking, evolution is essential. Embracing innovation, and new technology ensures that these iconic and historic estates not only preserve their legacy but also continue to thrive. At the winery we refer to this idea as sustainability, and we are committed to foster it and champion it.
Ancient winemaking techniques, juxtaposed with state-of-the-art facilities and sustainable practices. The past informs the present, guiding winemakers in the pursuit of excellence. Meanwhile, they look forward to a future where they can adapt to changing climates, consumer preferences, and global challenges.
In essence, a winemaking pedigree steeped in history is like a compass guiding us, vintners, toward a bright, promising horizon. It’s the perfect blend of old-world charm and new-world ingenuity, creating wines that are timeless and ever-evolving, much like the vineyards themselves.
Beautifully written, Juan Mu?oz-Oca and 26 generations, incredible!
