Futureproofing scholarly publishing: Wiley’s journey with Research Exchange

Open access has transformed the scholarly publishing process for societies, editors, authors, and publishers. Where once the platforms and workflows may have been straightforward, we now have an increasingly complex ecosystem of software supporting open science. Tackling open access publishing at scale is a challenge, but there is opportunity to pave the way for change and drive a better researcher experience across the board.

As part of this, our end-to-end vision for publishing with Research Exchange includes modernizing the submission, screening, and peer review steps before finally delivering a published article. Our product suite is interoperable with your own systems as well as with our Atypon platform to complete the end-to-end experience.

Legacy workflows and platforms can hold us back from a more streamlined publishing framework that promotes clean data, simplifies author experience, reduces cost, and facilitates interoperability. Wiley has moved more than1,000 of its journals to Research Exchange Submission and will now enable others to bring their publications onto the platform as well.

We want everyone in publishing to have a seamless experience, but we’re focusing first on the researcher, the heart of this community.

We’ll be rolling this out in three distinct phases, the first of which is already here with Research Exchange Submission. Next spring, you will be able to use Research Exchange Screening, which delivers our AI-powered paper mill detection and workflow efficiency tools. With the third phase — Research Exchange Review will be available in 2026 — the full editorial process will be supported with smart peer review management tools and post peer review research integrity checks.

In addition to the benefits for authors, editors, and reviewers, publishers get to keep as many high-quality papers as possible within your portfolio, by using our transfer service.

Workflows, data, and quality checks determine the publishing experience for everyone involved. We’re committed to both leading the charge and pushing the industry forward with the goal of first futureproofing and improving the author experience. It’s already working — the Submission component of Research Exchange currently has a 98% approval rating. As we move forward, we intend to bring Wiley’s 200 years of publishing expertise to a digital-first, open science world.
