In the future years, how many immigrants will Canada accept?

Between 2022 and 2024, Canada is on course to welcome a record number of new immigrants.

Despite the epidemic, Canada had a record number of permanent residents in 2021, with over 405,000. By 2022, Canada has recently released a revised target of over 432,000 immigrants and even higher numbers in 2023 and 2024. The numbers may seem highly specific, but each target is based on the Canadian government’s Immigration Levels Plan 2022-2024.

What is the strategy for immigration levels?

The Immigration Levels Plan is used by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to calculate the overall number of permanent residents Canada will welcome in a particular year. It also specifies the immigration categories under which permanent residents will be accepted. Since the late 1980s, Canada has welcomed over 200,000 immigrants on a yearly basis, with the number increasing to over 300,000 prior to the pandemic. Since 2021, the annual target has risen to over 400,000, or around 1.1 percent of Canada's population.

Why does Canada require newcomers?

The unemployment rate in Canada is now at an all-time low. According to the latest recent statistics from Statistics Canada, unemployment is at 5.2 percent, the lowest it has been since records began in the 1970s. This is because Canada's population is ageing, and the birth rate is insufficient to replace the nine million employees who will retire by 2030. With an average of 1.5 children per woman, Canada has one of the lowest birth rates in the world.

With fewer Canadian-born citizens, Canada relies on immigrants to work and contribute taxes in order to support an aging population. For example, according to the?2022 federal budget, healthcare spending is projected to rise significantly over the coming years to an estimated $56 billion in 2027. Immigration is vital to ensuring that Canada has a robust economy as well as strong social services and healthcare that everyone benefits from, including permanent residents.

How does it function?

IRCC analyses data such as demographics, economic and labour force indicators, integration capability, worldwide situations, and processing capacity in order to stay up with the ever-changing demands of the labour market and close the workforce gap. The ultimate objective is to devise a strategy that would strengthen Canada's economy, reunite families, and give humanitarian aid. The Immigration Levels Plan is based on finding this equilibrium.

How does the IRCC calculate the figures?

Economic immigration will account for 57 percent of Canada's yearly immigration objective during the next three years. Over 240,000 additional permanent residents are expected to arrive each year, with a target of 267,750 skilled employees entering by 2024.

About 25% of new permanent residents will be selected through?family class sponsorship, those who are being sponsored by a relative in Canada who is already a permanent resident or?citizen. Over 100,000 will be arriving each year.

The remaining 18% of new permanent residents will be made up of?refugees and humanitarian class?immigrants. The plan targets just under 85,000 people in 2022 and with a gradual decrease in numbers into 2024.
