Welcome to the future of work, where figuring out what you love to do isn't just a pie-in-the-sky luxury idea.
Nope. This is an idea that's made for nearly everyone, including people who "just need a job," feel like they're hanging on by their fingernails, or hiding from each round of layoffs.
It's tempting to believe, as someone recently wrote to me:
I need to find a job and support my family. I’m not sure I can take time to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.
But exactly the opposite is true. When you are job seeking (whether you're currently employed or not), you'd better know what you want to be when you grow up. Here's why.
Why Finding Work You Love Isn't A Luxury
When You Do Work You Don't Care About, It Shows.
People can tell when you're fired up about the work you're doing. It's like you're on warp speed, with enough energy and enthusiasm to fuel the room. You become magnetic. Conversely, people can tell when you're not fired up - even when you just have normal levels of energy for the work you're doing.
In the future (which is starting right now), companies aren't loyal to employees. They seek top performers. If you can't claim that title, you may have to worry about job security, and standing out from the competition in a job search may be difficult too.
Standing Out From The Competition Is The Name Of The Game.
What would make an employer choose you, when you're the twentieth "self-starter" they've seen today?
They want something new and unique, something that makes them stand up and notice. That uniqueness is your authenticity, and your authenticity is whatever you care about most at work.
What you need to wow employers with is not that you can be a "self-starter" but that you can solve their particular problem because you put so much of your energy (passion) behind it. It's the passion and enthusiasm that makes it authentic.
If you cared as much about solving a company's problems as they did, why wouldn't they hire you?
That's what companies are looking for today, and that's exactly why it is imperative that you take the time to figure out what you love to do.
Here's the trick though. It isn't all about what you love. It's about what's at the intersection of what you love, what you're great at, and what a company will pay you to do.
That is what a great personal brand strategy will do for you.
And that is what I can help you do if you work with me.
