Future of Work - Think Like an Entrepreneur!

Future of Work - Think Like an Entrepreneur!

Hi there,

You don't need to be off the corporate payroll to think like an entrepreneur. On the contrary, to thrive and ensure you don't get disrupted, you need to start to think like an entrepreneur.

Because in the future of work, you are not paid according to how hard you work, you are paid according to how hard you are to replace. And it is so apt today. If you role is likely to be replaced by Gen AI, then you should be worried about your pay/job.

In my book, REINVENT 4.0, I had a whole chapter dedicated to "entrepreneurial thinking".

So what is entrepreneurial thinking?

Agility is the hallmark of an entrepreneurial mindset; it helps you become more resourceful, flexible and ready to adapt. Entrepreneurs are nimble; they invest in themselves. They build their professional networks. They take intelligent risks. They make uncertainty and volatility work to their advantage.

So in the future of work, our approach to achieving career success has to change. We need to navigate our career like an entrepreneur. It is a mindset.

Consider the following scenarios:

When you tell others that you want to make what you used to earn by working only 10% of the time.

  • Someone with an employee mindset will say that's impossible.
  • Someone with an entrepreneurial mindset will make it happen.

When things are going well,

  • Someone with an employee mindset will say "don't change when things are not broken".
  • Those with an entrepreneurial mindset will think "let's start looking at new opportunities".

When one door closes,

  • Those with an employee mindset will wait for another door to open.
  • Those with an entrepreneurial mindset will create new doors.

If you want to be in the driver seat of your career and life, embrace an entrepreneurial mindset.

These are the very same skills professionals need to get ahead today in the corporate treadmill.

These skills will become very useful when you decide to step off the corporate ladder later.

The entrepreneur mindset is about taking ownership of your career. It's about being proactive, adaptable, and resourceful. Here's why it matters:

  • Spot Opportunities: The entrepreneur sees challenges as springboards. They identify needs and gaps in the market, then develop solutions. In your role, this could mean streamlining processes, proposing innovative ideas, or identifying new customer segments.
  • Embrace Change: The future is fluid. New skills will be in constant demand. The entrepreneur thrives on learning, adapting, and upskilling. This agility keeps you relevant and in-demand.
  • Own Your Value: It's no longer about punching a clock. Your worth is tied to the value you deliver. By thinking like an entrepreneur, you focus on the impact of your work, constantly seeking ways to add more.
  • Build Your Brand: You are a business of one. The entrepreneur cultivates their professional reputation. Network strategically, showcase your expertise, and position yourself as a problem-solver.

Thinking like an entrepreneur isn't about starting a business; it's about taking charge of your professional destiny. It's about approaching your work with ownership, creativity, and a hunger for growth. Embrace the mindset, and watch your future flourish.

Society flourishes when people think entrepreneurially.
