Future of Work with Cloud: Intelligent Buildings

Intelligent Buildings: Why we NEED Change NOW

Buildings without "intelligence" are too inefficient. They rely on multiple systems for lighting, heating and other necessities with each one operating independently of the other, as if in silos. This has come at the expense of energy, building use and cost-effectiveness. It also could be a risk to our health!

In this blog, we explore "Intelligent" buildings and its promise to improve efficiency by connecting these systems to reduce operating costs and increase the safety, productivity and quality of life of those who work, study, play and live inside their walls.

“Implementing Abound … has improved the facility staff and administration's ability to understand and manage the health and safety of our buildings”

-Bill Seberg, Chief Support Services Officer, Cherokee County School District

Intelligent Buildings: What exactly are they?

The connected, "intelligent" building is the reality of today's smart operational demands. It is an empowering approach to building technology where every system is connected and controlled through a single operating system. Both intelligent and smart buildings have similar features that combine IoT devices, online connectivity, and energy efficiency. One key difference is automation —?while smart buildings offer interfaces to control facility operations, intelligent buildings manage them automatically.

3 Key Benefits of Intelligent Buildings:

  1. Lower Lifetime Costs: the life-cycle costs of smart buildings are lower and payback happens quicker. A key driver for integrating systems and making buildings more intelligent is the energy savings that can be achieved. The operational benefits obtained from integration, however, are equally important.
  2. Smarter Is Also Healthier: enhance the health, happiness and productivity of the people in them. Improved air quality can boost worker productivity between a half percent and 5 percent, according to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Nationwide, this could translate into additional revenue between $20 billion and $200 billion.
  3. The GREEN Mission: Smart buildings have been shown to be "greener" in its data-driven ability to save energy, streamline building management and prevent expensive equipment failures. "Intelligent" buildings will outpace conventional buildings over time as a result of how efficiently they run. The added benefits of increased safety and a higher quality of life for those inside make smart buildings a good bet for the future!
