Why EQ Matters More Than Ever

As I prepare for the upcoming workshop with BALINCA , I've been reflecting on the role of emotional intelligence (EQ) in the workplace. For years, working in the technology sector, I, like many others, believed technology was the key to future success. However, my experience as a tech professional and futurist has revealed a surprising truth: in a world increasingly automated by machines, our ability to connect and manage emotions will be paramount.

Here's why:

Data Shows EQ Drives Performance

Studies like TalentSmart's, which measured EQ alongside other workplace skills, show a clear correlation: emotional intelligence is the single strongest predictor of success, explaining a whopping 58% of performance across all job types.

Empathy: Your Secret Weapon in a Digital World

Let's take empathy, the ability to understand and share emotions. In today's digital landscape, with over 5 billion internet users, our online personas become global reflections. What we post can no longer be isolated to a small circle; it's seen in the vast internet context. This is where empathy, coupled with cultural intelligence, becomes crucial for navigating social media responsibly.

Embedding Care and Connection in Large Organizations

Large organizations can sometimes feel impersonal. I've experienced frustrations – missed meetings, unclear communication, and a lack of follow-through. These issues often stem from unmet needs. Learning about Nonviolent Communication (NVC) helped me understand how seemingly unproductive behavior can be rooted in human needs. Manfred Max-Neef (1932 – 2019) theory of nine universal needs suggests that both individuals and organizations operate from a place of seeking fulfillment. By fostering open communication and actively listening to everyone's needs, we create a smoother, more collaborative work environment.

Deepen Your Dive: A Suggested Read

If you're looking to further explore the concepts introduced here, especially Nonviolent Communication (NVC), I highly recommend Marshall B. Rosenberg's seminal work, Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. This book delves deeper into the NVC framework, offering practical tools and exercises for cultivating empathy, expressing needs authentically, and fostering genuine connection in all your interactions.
