The future of wellness. Are you ready?
Welcome
It wasn't so long ago that many investors just didn't get wellness. Was it juice cleanses? Meditation? Skin care, or Fitbits? Over the years I've heard stories from forward-thinking founders who have left countless meetings demoralised, because stony-faced backers believed consumers 'weren't quite ready'. (Thankfully, many of these entrepreneurs went on to find partners who wholeheartedly believed in their vision, or they bootstrapped and achieved greater control in the long-run).
But today, the wellness industry is in the midst of a gold rush –?accelerated by the pandemic – as consumers seek new opportunities to improve their overall physical and mental wellbeing. In recent months, we've seen a surge of celebrity founders (likely inspired by the 'queen of wellness' Gwyneth Paltrow) including Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Halle Berry, Cara Delevingne and Lily Allen enter the fold, one of which, actress Dakota Johnson, invested in sexual wellness pioneer Maude: our Pure Beauty Interview this month. Founder éva Goicochea reveals how the power of beautiful design can revolutionise an archaic category.?
And it's not just Hollywood faces entering the feel-good sphere. Huda Beauty's investment arm HB Ventures released its second wellness brand Humantra, Pure Beauty can reveal. The influencer-founded firm joins a growing number of VCs specialising in the sector, such as Waldencast and Vaultier7, keen to tap into the US$1.5 trillion global wellness market.?
Despite this flurry of activity, consumer reliance on e-commerce during the pandemic did hit many enterprises hard, especially those that rely on bricks-and-mortar to provide services and treatments. But this just made some entrepreneurs even more determined to get consumers back on the high street, like The Organic Pharmacy founder Margo Marrone, who opened up her 'dream' store after 20 years in business.?
In this issue, the first Pure Beauty dedicated to wellness, we explore the many innovations happening in the holistic space. Some launches seem futuristic, like Amorepacific's 'mind-linked' bathbot, while others are reimaginings of ancient practices now backed by fresh data, like Ayurvedic copper treatments or transdermal patches, which can be traced back to 2000 BC China. Now, sit back, relax and enjoy this soothing issue of Pure Beauty.
