the future is uncertain but some things are more clear than ever

How do you want to be remembered? We have a mission to accomplish together.

As I sit on a balcony somewhere in the South of Spain, reading about the many victims this virus has taken, I get a large lump in my throat. To my left, I see a bit of the sea, and I can also hear it, as there is so much silence now. To my right I see the top of a mountain. I can’t go visit any of them, as the world is now sitting still, in isolation, in the safety of our homes.

We focus on each moment and we wait. The unknown feels like nothing and everything at the same time. Uncertainty, while scary, is full of possibilities, and we can still set our intentions for the future. A future that I hope will look a lot different than our recent past.

We can now take action for the Planet we live on, for the people whom live here with us. We can keep our hope that there will be a better tomorrow for us all. At least a better one than the forecasts tell, as even the most optimistic look sad.

The future now is about giving back! It can no longer be about taking, with no questions asked. It cannot be all about playing the game anymore.

So I ask you: from all that you have, what do you give back? How do your actions, the decisions you make impact your ecosystem? How do the organizations you are part of contribute to humanity’s future?

If you don’t know how to answer these questions without a pang of guilt, then you just need to do more, try harder. I do feel the guilt, there is such a gap between what I know I can give and what actually goes out there, where needs must be covered by solutions. How much more of your passion and skills can be used for the greater good, while pursuing to bring real value to your tribe, your team and your mentors?

The opposite is to join a certain club, glamorous and beautiful, but no longer trendy. That is the club of entitled and privileged few, those who play to win for the sake of winning the capitalist or political game. Members of this club desire to be among today’s leaders, shaping the world of tomorrow. The incentive is huge. The outcome is to determine the legacy we leave behind. We need to do more to narrow the gap.

Throughout generations, we have created systems that allow us to get our needs met. Sometimes, they have been accomplished with important values in mind; but other times, we have fulfilled beliefs that only stem from our egos. Through these systems, some important unwritten responsibilities of being human started to fade, due to written laws.

Let’s put the rules of humanity first for a while, while still respecting the written ones meant to keep us safe. Let’s formalise or just express clearly, through mantras, actions and mission statements, some basic rules of humanity.

Those who choose not to follow the accepted behaviours will not be formally punished, they will simply join that self-indulgent club. People can always leave that group, taking members along, but the privileged will not feel as if they’ve been left behind. Who knows, maybe they will be inspired to follow.

Reveal who you really are, deep inside, bring your whole self to work. Take a break from the daily winning and focus on the journey towards saving our home and the teamwork needed for this to happen. There is nothing to lose in this battle.

Your worth is not about what you have managed to accumulate, but instead the legacy you leave behind.
