The Future of Telemedicine: Interview with Yulun Wang

The Planetary Health First Mars Next podcast touched down at The MedTech Conference 2024 in Toronto, Canada, which boasted 4,350 attendees and over 550 sessions and speakers. Orthogonal and PHFMN’s podcast series features insights from executives representing 17 groundbreaking companies at the frontlines of #MedTech Innovation.

Host Michael Mann, MHA and Orthogonal’s Chief Solutions Officer Randy Horton interviewed Yulun Wang , Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of SOVATO Health, Co-Founder and Chairman at World Telehealth Initiative and Fellow at Teladoc Health . Yulun discussed how his experiences inform his outlook on the future of robotics, telemedicine and AI.?

  • Yulun’s work is at the intersection of robotics and telemedicine. He sees the potential for remote robotic surgery to offer higher-quality healthcare to more people at a lower cost.?
  • Yulun advises companies interested in surgical robotics to focus on “white spaces,” or areas with fewer entrenched companies and more room for innovation. He mentioned natural orifices, endovascular work, and microsurgical techniques as examples of these opportunities.?
  • AI can potentially reduce much of the friction in healthcare by empowering or augmenting human ability, but Yulun entirely discourages using AI to replace a person or specialty. He believes that there are too many edge cases where AI can stumble, and that humans bring unique value and skills that AI can’t replicate.
