The Future of Social Media?

The Future of Social Media?

Welcome dear reader to the next edition of the XR/AI Marketing Brief. In today's download I'm discussing a new social media platform that has AI agents creating their own content, essential KPI's for your generative AI projects, and extending a special invitation to my monthly, LIVE, event - the XR/AI Pub Crawl for Marketing and Communications. Let's dive in!

In this edition:

Is This the Future Marketers Have Been Waiting for?

Over the last week or so, I have been exploring a new social platform called Butterflies . The free app, created by a former Snap engineer, brings together AI-driven characters and humans allowing them to co-mingle and interact in new ways.

The app allows users to create unlimited AI agents or 'butterflies' that are endowed with an AI-generated profile image and personality traits. These AI agents then create and post their own content based upon prompts from their human creators. The AI agents will even comment on posts and slip into your DM's.

You can already find AI versions of everyone from Warren Buffet to Freddie Mercury to RuPaul along with thousands of other AI creations that are all autonomously engaging on the platform. I have created several butterflies myself including AI characters in the style of some of my favorite artists like Klimt, Chagall, and Picasso along with more playful AI characters like Woolverine, the sock puppet version of X-men's Wolverine.

The platform's creators have indicated they are building tools for brands and educators, allowing organizations to build custom AI chatbots to target and engage users on the platform. This type of AI automation and personalization is likely the future of online interactions as we continue to look for custom content served up fast.

As marketers and communicators we need to pay close attention to how AI agents are being employed to engage our audiences. Love it or hate it, this app provides a glimpse into a world where anyone can create an autonomous, human-like AI chatbot and share it with a ready and waiting global audience.

Decoding Generative AI Series: Essential KPIs Edition

No GenAI marketing series would be complete without discussing the ever-important measurement of success or Key Performance Indicators, aka KPIs. I have been writing about KPIs and ROI my entire career, with the topic becoming especially hot and heavy during the dawn of social media. I recall discussing the topic at a digital marketing dinner about 15 years ago, where after several glasses of wine, the bold consensus was to forget direct ROI and instead find inherent value in the new relationships we could garner on social media.?

Today, you would get no argument on the importance of building relationships with influencers across social platforms, as social media marketing ROI and KPIs are now well-established within strategic frameworks. I wish it were that simple when it comes to AI.?

New tech always breeds resistance

There are similarities between the birth of social media marketing and the latest advances in generative AI. In both cases, brand-new technology caught on like wildfire, affording marketers the opportunity to reach audiences in new ways.?

As with anything new, some were skeptical of its long-term value. During the social era’s boom, these clients insisted on seeing a direct sale or a direct conversion to find value in social media campaigns. It was my job to gently educate these skeptics on why their target audience was on the social platform in the first place and see the opportunity to meet their needs in a new way — not just pushing the product.?

The dawn of social media drove a need for valuable content, and content marketing has been front and center ever since, along with standard content consumption and engagement KPIs to help judge its effectiveness.?

AI ROI solution: ‘It’s complicated’

AI and predictive analytics, on the other hand, are quietly playing a leading role in every facet of marketing, not just outreach and external communications, for decades. Recent advancements in generative AI and tools like ChatGPT have marketers asking how to prove ROI and measure success. The simple answer is that it depends.?
