In the context of autonomous vehicles, smart paint can significantly improve vehicle communication, safety, and efficiency.

Primarily, these paints are being developed for use on autonomous vehicles. E-ink technologies and the integration of microprocessors into paint give autonomous vehicles a range of features that enhance their safety and functionality. For instance, these vehicles will be able to change colour depending on their operational state—whether they are driving autonomously or being manned by a driver. Additionally, they will be able to signal important information to pedestrians and other autonomous vehicles, such as the presence of hazards.

Moreover, Toyota is working on a new type of colour-changing paint. This revolutionary product changes colour based on the heat it is exposed to—not from the sun, but from a controlled process. If you would like to change the colour of your car coated with Toyota's new paint, all you need to do is take your car to the dealership where it was purchased. There, your car will undergo a baking process that changes its colour. This technology is still being developed however and has yet to be seen by the commercial market.

These innovative technologies hold immense promise for the future, paving the way for smarter, safer, and more efficient transportation and customisation solutions. Smart paint technology represents a significant leap forward in the evolution of automotive coatings. By enhancing safety and efficiency, it holds the potential to revolutionise how we interact with and manage autonomous vehicles.
