Future River Surveyors, How to Inspire Them
Storm Geomatics Limited
"Measurement experts for projects that reduce flooding and improve environmental conditions in rivers."
Storm Geomatics have recently created, in collaboration with Warwickshire County Council , an informative video, for anyone interested in a career as a Geospatial River Surveyor. Please do share this video with anyone you think is inspired to begin their Geospatial Career Journey. Storm is a sustainable company, this includes social sustainability. As employers Storm ensure people receive thorough training, are paid well and are supported in their personal career development.
In early November the local High School in Shipston on Stour invited Storm to attended their careers event for pupils in years 10 and 11. The afternoon was spent introducing the world of geospatial survey to an engaged audience of over 100 pupils. Some of whom had no knowledge of what critical role a geospatial surveyor plays in any project in the built or natural world. It was hugely rewarding to know that now local young people could potentially become geospatial surveyors in the very near future. One fine example being Trainee Surveyor James Walker . James has successfully completed his first three months in the role and is so far, showing great promise in his chosen career.
No fewer than 70% of the team at Storm Geomatics hold professional membership of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) . This professional qualification directly impacts the quality of survey deliverables, meaning Storm clients receive Hyper Intelligent Data. The most recent surveyors to gain their Technical Membership are Tom Isaac and William Shanks . Director Anthony Pritchard mentored them through the process and commented "It’s an absolute delight to see Tom and Will achieve technical membership and round off what has been a great year for professional qualifications at Storm.".
Last month Storm Geomatics embarked on the biggest survey project in nearly 18 years of the company. Progress is currently frustratingly slow due to adverse rainfall which has resulted in the Environment Agency "Strong Streams Warnings" limiting the progress of the project. Fortunately as the UK's only specialist river survey company demand for services was still high. A degree of logistical wizardry redeployed surveyors, survey kit and vehicles onto more accessible projects in other areas of the UK. Every operational person at Storm is qualified to Level 2 of #DEFRA Water Safety Training, equipped with the right skill set and essential knowledge eliminates any concern's from client's in the professional approach to site mobilisation even during the winter months.

As mid winter approaches, Storm Surveyors have become super efficient during diminishing daylight hours to maximise data collection and keep projects on their critical path. December will see Storm surveying from North Wales to the Lincolnshire Coast with more new clients coming on board to take advantage of the revolutionary River Digital Twin? service. Landowners, ecologists and urban planners can benefit by engaging early in the life cycle of their projects with Storm to maximise the data collected to provide better informed solutions.
A project on the River Lea, Hertfordshire led by Surveyor Will Shanks took advantage of Storm's unique River Digital Twin Service? to create a data set that will be used to advise on floodplain reconnection works. Enjoy the full Case Study
