Cellular IoT (CIoT) networks are a part and parcel of Mobile communications networks. Yes, Machines get equal status as us mortals and maybe more in time to come. An explosion is round the corner with over 30B connected devices to come by 2020. CIoT will leverage several technologies, including CAT-M1, LTE, or NB-IoT and 5G. 5G Architecture will see adoption of cognitive networks, enabling on-demand, stateful (agile), programmable, highly secure (encrypted), low latency, time synchronized traffic. Here are some use cases related to these parameters.
1. Firefighters are responsible for hands-on actions with fire suppression, search and rescue. Augmented Reality can help them with real time, stateful on demand data showing exit paths like stairwells, doors, fire shelters. Sensors will make a large portion of the early use cases. Imagine data dependent emergency services – flood, fire, typhoon.
2. Connected Homes and Enterprises need secure (encrypted) data. Imagine a hacker/burglar sending higher temperature settings to a hazardous factory forcing a fire risk. Similarly, with financial institutions like banks, where locker room/vault commands can be sent over the network, require encrypted traffic at the edge (MEC).
3. Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) such as connected Cars and V2X require low latency and good timing & synchronization. Latency is the round-trip delay represented by the duration of time the originated data packet is transmitted until the acknowledgment is received back at the originating point in the transmission. Examples of latency impacts –
- Milliseconds with People matter. For a self-driving car traveling 70 miles per hour, 100 ms latency means 10 feet to stop. 5G networks take it down to 1ms latency providing a platform for connected cars. Poor Timing and synchronization enable crashed cars and among others low latency, good Timing and synchronization enable connected cars and safe driving.
- Latency & Wall Street: The Tabb Group states, "… the value of time for a trading desk is decidedly nonlinear … if a broker's electronic trading platform is 5 ms behind the competition, it could lose at least 1% of its flow; that's $4 million in revenue per millisecond. Up to 10 ms of latency could result in a 10% drop in revenue. From there it gets worse."
