Future Perfect: Small Modular Reactors

The future of nuclear power is Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) which are being reduced to about the size of a garbage can by Nasa. As the size and complexity is reducing the number of possible applications for the technology is increasing. Possibilities such as one day powering a lunar base or propelling a space shuttle to another planet.

Bill Gates, Nasa, General Electric and others have been quietly funding the development of SMRs for many years. Through this development the technology has progressed dramatically. So much in fact that the US Government shut down Gates’ SMR operations in China due to national security concerns.

These new reactors are far less costly than existing reactors, operate safely, produce no greenhouse gas emissions, require less oversight, are more reliable than wind or solar power, easily scalable, and compact in design. They are also offer a potentially limitless power supply.

The new modular design comes with the added benefit of being able to be mass produced in a factory setting, and even some components can be 3D-printed. This lowers construction costs, increases safety, and makes SMRs easier to finance. Climate-friendly Turnkey nuclear reactors will one day come off the assembly line like any other modular unit.

They will work alongside renewables such as wind and solar power generation, while replacing coal and gas-fired plants, which have a negative impact on the environment. Having such a diverse supply of energy sources will ensure a constant flow of power and provide greater stability to the grid than renewables alone.

It’s amazing to think how useful these could be to the people in the high and cold mountains of the Andes, Titicaca Lake, Himalayas and similar places. Thanks For sharing.
