Future Perfect: Construction Careers In Space

Entirely new career paths for those interested in working among the stars are being envisioned; driven by the influx of private space companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Blue Origin.

As this new era of in-space construction approaches, additive manufacturing, robotic assembly, and autonomous systems will likely play a major role in building off-planet infrastructure. Infrastructure such as solar arrays, space habitats, lunar bases, and orbital platforms. However, for the foreseeable future the human component to in space construction will still be required.

This will create new career paths such as the Astro-structurist*, an expert in assembling off-planet structures using specialized tools, techniques, equipment, and knowledge. They possess special expertise and training for building in harsh environments that include sub-zero temperatures, extreme radiation, and zero gravity. They must also be able to carry out repair duties. They may be required to manufacture parts and materials using 3D printers in space or by transforming planetary resources into building supplies.

With the rapid advancement of off-world construction technology, the concept of building infrastructure in space or on another planet is no longer science fiction. It is simply a matter of when; and the Astro-structurist will be among the many new and exciting construction careers to emerge in space.
