Future Nurse Community

Future Nurse Community

Taking the advice of a great friend and colleague Breid O'Brien , I recently adopted a new habit: dedicating Fridays to positive uplifting conversations. In line with this, I've made it a point to use Fridays to forge new connections and explore fresh ideas. Last Friday was the second meeting of a small group of nurses and midwives who are working together to shape a community that supports the next generation of innovative entrepreneurial nurses who will deliver new thinking and the change needed for nursing in the digital age. Sophie Brooks Bernadette Porter MBE Gillian Taylor Ishbel Straker

The conversation today, was nothing short of inspiring. Here are some key observations from our discussion:

?

Resilience: The members of our group exhibit remarkable resilience and so have made it to fully fledged entrepreneurs but relying on resilience is not fair on innovative nurses.

?

Collaboration: (16) Jackie Marshall-Cyrus FRSA | LinkedIn , one of the directors from The iCrowd CIC , beautifully captured the spirit of collaboration within our group, describing Lisa as the "wind beneath her wings." This sentiment resonated deeply with all present we are all each others cheerleaders.

?

Research and Insight: Lisa Rickers shared her research findings , which showed significant barriers for those seeking to innovate. We discussed the need for organisations to support and nurture the innovative spirit of young nurses, potentially fostering an entrepreneurial mindset within the profession.

?

Manifesto for Action: Stacey Hatton, RN MSc Health IT CDH-L chapter on entrepreneurship in a recent publication Harnessing Digital Technology & Data for Nursing Practice , resonates strongly with the themes of our discussion. We identified parallels between Stacey's findings and Lisa's research, leading to a commitment to explore these connections further and share our collective insights to further our thinking.

?

Paying it Forward: Recognising the importance of supporting emerging entrepreneurs, we collectively agreed to pay forward our hard-earned expertise and experience. The group identified some key actions to do this including mentoring up and coming innovators and entrepreneurs, using our individual and collective voices to raise awareness,

?

Diversity and Inclusivity: Our conversation also touched on the crucial topics of diversity and inclusivity. Lisa's definition struck a chord with us all, reinforcing the importance of embracing a wide range of perspectives and voices within our community. That's why our allies are so important to us, thank you Jimmy Endicott Calum Macleod SmartCo Consulting We continued to challenge ourselves on purpose, identified potential new founder members who would help us shape purpose and our offering and broaden our community's reach. Welcome Jessie Dhaliwal Lincoln Gombedza MSc Antonia Brown

?

Breaking out of Our Bubble: We emphasised the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones and engaging with individuals outside our usual circles, fostering new connections and perspectives. This perspective fits with a plan to create a community that acts as an ecosystem of medtech and nurses/midwives and we agreed to seek more medtech members and sponsorship.

?

Looking ahead, we are eagerly anticipating our upcoming in-person meeting, generously sponsored by Healthy.io ? and hosted at The King's Fund . Will be interesting to speak to Pritesh Mistry who only last week called out the challenges of innovating in the NHS . This gathering will provide us with ample time to delve deeper into our connections and further shape this new community of practice.

?

In summary, our Future Nurse Community is more than just a network—it's a dynamic force driving positive change and innovation within the nursing profession. I'm excited to see where our collective efforts take us and am honoured to be working with this small group of founders to shape it. Here's to continued growth, collaboration, and innovation in nursing! And if you're curious reach out we want to talk to you.

I have (Telopea) registered nurses who are really good so are others I’m sure, working within my client base. It would relieve district nurses if my agency that has a nursing registration was able to do what’s necessary with our clients rather than call the DN team who are very busy. Your post Natasha was very interesting. Brenda

Love this and love that Breid’s Friday positivity is spreading. It makes such a difference to how you step into the weekend and often is the catalyst you need to shift your thinking and answer that question that can sometimes lurk into the weekend. I’ve also added an hour wind down where I reflect on the week, have a quick look at what’s coming up and finish feeling like I’ve finished the week.

Glad to know you’re enjoying positive Fridays! So important to go into your weekend with positive energy. My Friday club has been a very positive part of my work life and probably generated my most inspiring thoughts.
