Edition 5: The Future in Motion
Exploring Urban Mobility, Effective Leadership Communication, and Nvidia's Triumph
Our Kalaari Office is based in Whitefield, Bangalore.
A few months ago a new metro station was inaugurated in Whitefield, and more metro routes are under construction.?
In Jan 2024, the city metro’s monthly ridership crossed 2 crore; up 30% in just a year.?
According to the statistics from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), 2 crore individuals utilised the metro system in December, averaging 6.88 lakh passengers per day. The revenue generated from fares amounted to approximately Rs 55 crore.
With that, Bangalore has the second-largest metro network, with Delhi being first, of course!
The Delhi Metro has helped cut pollution in the city by 630,000 tons per year.
Private vehicles contribute to around 50% of the pollution in Delhi, and the Metro has managed to keep 1.17 lakh vehicles off the road.
I used to travel 20 km to school every day via the APSRTC public bus. I had a 20 Rupee pass and it covered unlimited travel by bus anywhere in the city. And I made full use of this facility, wandering on weekends and holidays - visiting libraries, going to competitions, attending cultural events, etc.
As a 9-year-old, when my parents put me in a new school far away, with that pass in my pocket, I discovered what independence felt like. All my mobility needs were safely met - there was no notion of parents chaperoning us.?
As much as I used buses while growing up, in Bangalore it is impractical from an efficiency standpoint. Certain cities like London, Boston, and NYC with their extensive public transport systems make it comfortable and efficient.?
In India, we have a vast railway network and for the last two decades, a decent airport network. But I wish we had better city transport systems.?
The livability of a city lies in its public transport system — making cities more accessible, and safer, by nurturing the lively hum of daily activity.
Every city greatly benefits from enhanced Metro rail connectivity. I hope that Metro rail development becomes as fundamental to urban planning as roads are. The advantages are clear and significant:
In recent news, Spain is banning short domestic flights where train service is easily available. It's inspiring to see initiatives like these that push us to make sustainable and convenient choices.

Mini Masterclass on Effective Communication
Growing up, I was always fascinated by stories.?
My parents had this incredible ability to weave tales that would transport me to different worlds, far beyond the walls of our home.
That, I believe, was my first lesson in communication.?
I realised how effective communication hinges on connecting and resonating with others through shared experiences and ideas, and also how it bridges differences, fosters understanding, and ultimately, brings people together.
Effective communication is more than just exchanging information; it's about understanding the emotions and intentions behind the information.
As I grew older, I learnt that effective communication and public speaking skills are invaluable traits that set you apart.?
Public speaking is crucial for leaders/founders to inspire, lead, and foster strong relationships.
To master the art of public speaking, it is important to keep practising. It helps you overcome fear and improves your ability to communicate effectively. Confidence and fluency follow.
As far as effective communication is concerned, it demands an ability to listen actively, present ideas persuasively, and adapt to diverse audiences.
In a world cluttered with noise and “content”, being able to articulate your thoughts well makes all the difference.

Nvidia was in the news, for all the good reasons. It has surpassed the $2 trillion valuation mark.
Fascinating company!
You may or may not have heard of Nvidia, but we all are users of their products. Their chips are probably in our phones, our computers, or our automobiles.
Today, Nvidia is one of the most important tech companies in the world. And I wonder if FAANG would soon become FAANNG. :)?
But what does Nvidia do??
Nvidia is the pioneer of the Graphics Processor Unit industry. Without GPUs, there would be no machine learning, video editing, or modern gaming software.
After cementing its monopoly for GPUs, Nvidia broadened its scope to include high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). Now, it uses the same gaming processors, albeit repurposed for varied computational demands across industries.
Huang co-founded Nvidia with his friends in 1993 to improve the graphics of personal computers at that time. They aimed to create new hardware specialised for games.
Nvidia went public in just 6 years, in 1999. They were valued at $625 million at the stock market.
- As of February 21, 2024, Nvidia recorded full-year revenue of $60.9 billion, up 126%, and quarterly revenue of $22.1 billion, up 22% from Q3, up 265% from a year ago.?
- It’s quarterly Data Center revenue of $18.4 billion, up 27% from Q3, up 409% from a year ago.
- Nvidia holds a staggering 95% share of the GPU market for machine learning.?
These numbers are mind-boggling, aren’t they???
Accelerated computing and generative AI have reached a critical juncture, and the demands are skyrocketing globally among businesses, sectors, and countries.
Also, did you know??
ChatGPT was trained using 10,000 of Nvidia's graphic processing units (GPUs).
Huang’s humble beginnings as a waiter seemed to have helped shape his character to dream big and persist.
The metamorphosis of the entire industry they helped create is quite fascinating.
I am excited to see what more Nvidia has in store for us.

The First Ever VC Investment:
In 1946, Georges Doriot established the American Research and Development Corporation (ARD) using $3.5 million. This event is considered the birth of the venture capital industry.
Doriot's significant investment was putting $70,000 into the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) via ARD, which impressively grew to $355 million.

11 个月Spain banning short flights is a foolish overreach of government bureaucracy. There can be many reasons for a short flight, such as placement of aircraft in right airport, perishable cargo, crew movement, etc. All the government needs to do to achieve the goal of promoting train travel for shorter distances is to use the price mechanism...tax short flights more, but do not ban them.

Union of India. I annexed several letters from top academicians of top academic institutions favoring me that declare that result drawn from instrument Raman and FTIR Spectroscopy cannot be overruled by intermediate passed gemologists having only 4-1/2 months professional diploma in gemmology. How A just intermediate pass professional course holder whether can deny the scientific results emerging from an instrument Raman and FTIR Spectroscopy designed and developed on the principles of two Noble Prize winners Sir C.V.Raman and Sir William Lawrence Bragg and Sir William Henry Bragg who formulated milestone Bragg's Law studied by science graduates and post graduates in every nook and corner of the world. However, this was my begining that ended somewhere in 2008

11 个月After becoming a science postgraduate in 1986 I started my journey in completely unknown lightening, dazzling but completely dark gemology field from 1986 onwards with nobody to help me. I put gems in freezer, buried gems in deep earth etc. and somewhere in 2005 I succeeded in one of my large goal. In 2008 I walked throughout Indian gemmological laboratories and finally stopped at R & D Laboratory of India Gemmological Institute of India (GII). Handed over to GII four Rubies for certification and when the gem testing Report came in my hands to my utter surprise all my four rubies were declared as Synthetic or Duplicate by GII, Bombay. A special test Raman and FTIR Spectroscopic been performed by GII, Bombay indicated all my gems as Ruby but GII, Bombay didn't put reliance on calibration done by state-of-the-art Raman and FTIR Spectroscopy and remained stuck with the observatory test and Refractive index of the gem that became their base in declaring my specimen gem as synthetic.

11 个月Why this vocational course of gemmology seems tough to the faculty of the geologists working as professors and Readers of geology department in the prestigious university of Lucknow despite of the fact that gems too are mineral like other minerals in India. The answer come by itself when one goes through the Indian history of minerals. You cannot find a single nomenclature of a single mineral that has been done by Indian geologist. No school, college University, Centre of Excellence of India are indulged in researches related to gemology. The subject of gemology is deeply involved in every aspect of modern science like physics, Chemistry, Maths, geology, geography, metals, metallurgy, atomic science, crystallography, superconductivity, solid state physics and many more including para science. .
