The Future of Mining
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of attending the Future of Mining conference in Perth, an event that brought together industry leaders, policymakers, innovators (and me!) to discuss the current landscape and future prospects of the mining sector. It was an enlightening experience, marked by insightful presentations and thought-provoking discussions.
One of the highlights was the address by The Hon. David Michael, Western Australia's Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Ports, Local Government, Road Safety, and Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport. Minister Michael shared compelling statistics highlighting the significant economic impact of the mining sector in Western Australia. In 2023, the sector generated a staggering $248 billion in sales, supported 130,165 full-time jobs, and saw $2.6 billion invested in mineral exploration—a vital component representing ~1% of total revenue. These figures underscore the crucial role mining plays in our state's economy and its potential for further growth.
Allison Britt, Director of Mineral Resources Advice and Promotion at Geoscience Australia, provided a fascinating perspective on the geological landscape. She emphasized that 80% of Australia's continent is covered by younger sediments, posing a challenge for discovering new mineral deposits. This raised critical questions about future funding sources for exploration and the technological advancements necessary to uncover these hidden resources. Will increased investment in exploration lead to more discoveries, or do we need innovative technologies beyond traditional drilling methods? Allison's insights sparked a conversation about the role of smaller, more agile junior mining companies in driving grass-roots discoveries—a segment often at the forefront of innovation.
At Axis Hire, where I serve as the Business Development Manager, we are committed to supporting the exploration and mining industries with our diverse and multi-purpose fleet. From light vehicles and lighting plants to heavy machinery such as excavators and trucks, Axis Hire stands ready to meet the demands of both large-scale projects and niche operations across exploration, mining, civil, and construction sectors.
Interestingly, the conference coincided with the visit of Premier Li Qiang of the People's Republic of China to Perth, hosted by Western Australian Premier Roger Cook. This high-level delegation underscores the strategic importance of mining and resource partnerships between our state and international markets. It begs the question—did discussions also touch upon collaborative opportunities in mining and infrastructure development?

I look forward to continuing these discussions and exploring ways in which Axis Hire can contribute to the success and sustainability of mining ventures in Western Australia and beyond.
Let's build the future of mining together.
