The future of learning spaces

The future of learning spaces

At a recent reception and seminar with education experts, Dr Joanne Ladds presented key findings and a panel discussion from a comprehensive study on the future of learning spaces.

The event, hosted by Noble + Eaton, focused on how to create more effective school environments and unpacked research conducted with education leaders Sarah Broadhurst, Dr James Whitehead FRSA, Charles Bailey, Ian Wigston FRSA, and Neil Cufley.

“We’ve gone out to over 200 leaders and asked them, ‘What are you seeing in your learning environments, and how can we make a difference?’” says Dr Joanne in the interview we filmed below.

The responses helped inform a series of important strategies, including the idea of 'reverse engineering' success.?

“One of the key takeaways, was to think about reverse engineering. You start by asking, ‘What does success look like?’ and then work backwards from there."

"This approach allows us to integrate these findings into policies and practices, ensuring that learners are always at the centre of those discussions,” Dr Joanne said.

Learners have a say

Key to this approach is the idea that learners need to have a say in how their environments are shaped.

“We’re asking, ‘What do students want from their learning spaces? What do they envision?’” Dr. Ladds emphasised.

"And it’s not just about asking - it’s about asking in different ways so that everyone is included in those discussions, regardless of their background or learning style.”

Collaboration with the sector

Dr. Ladds also spoke about the importance of collaboration. “The reason we hold these events is that we want to listen to expert panels and hear what they’re seeing across the industry."

"Their insights, combined with the questions from our audience, give us a wealth of information that directly informs our designs. We want to make sure our solutions are impactful."

Creating spaces that make a difference

Reflection: design that meets the needs of stakeholders

By combining research, expert insights, and feedback from educators, Noble + Eaton is committed to creating spaces that truly make a difference.

“Getting these great insights is crucial because they inform the work we do,” Dr. Ladds added.

"It’s really important to us that every design reflects the real needs of students and teachers alike."

The event underscored the importance of continuous dialogue between education leaders, designers, and the students who ultimately use these spaces.

Through this process, Noble + Eaton aims to create learning environments that are not only functional but transformative.
