The Future of Leadership - Why Self-Leadership is the Key to Success
Whether he said it, or not (which is in doubt), let’s take Darwin’s ‘quote’ as our way into talking about leadership: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives.?It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”??
According to Holly Ransom , IMEX America speaker and global authority on leadership and change, the leaders who thrive today are the ones who embrace adaptability and who start by leading themselves.?
Through her work with thought outliers like Malcolm Gladwell, political figures like the Clintons, and entrepreneurs such as Richard Branson, Holly has identified a common thread among exceptional leaders: self-leadership.??
She explains, “They’ve done the work on themselves first. It’s only when they’ve developed self-awareness and personal growth that they can build inclusive, high-performing teams.”?
This concept of self-leadership goes beyond the idea of authority or management.??
It’s about an ongoing commitment to self-awareness, personal development, and continuous learning. As Holly points out, “Leadership is about much more than just having a position of power—it’s a never-ending journey of self-improvement.”?
Curiosity: A Key Driver for Great Leaders?
One of the most interesting traits she’s observed in exceptional leaders is their curiosity. They have an insatiable desire to learn and grow, believing they can learn from anyone or anything. “The best leaders are always on the hunt for new ideas, skills, and experiences to add to their leadership toolkit,” she says.?
This curiosity, combined with a willingness to challenge old ways of thinking, is what sets truly good leaders apart. In today’s world, where technology and societal changes are rapidly altering the workplace, the ability to stay curious and open-minded, she argues, is essential.?
Leaders Need to Play with AI?

A crucial area where this curiosity is being tested is with AI. Leaders are beginning to see the massive potential of artificial intelligence, but too many are hesitant to dive in. Holly believes that leaders need to give themselves permission to play with AI. “It’s about modelling curiosity,” she says. Leaders must ask themselves, “How can AI impact my customers? My employees?” Without taking the time to experiment and understand these tools, some leaders risk falling behind.?

2 个月This relates to chapter 26 in my new book ("Twist the Familiar") just published in July, something I call "the duality of leadership." Along the same lines as Holly talks about, I write that "leaders have to be comfortable being uncomfortable." And since leadership is a behavior and not a title, it's important to know that leaders can get stuck, too. They are charged with leading their team and pulling it up the hill, but who does that for them? It therefore is critical for leaders to never stop learning because life never stops teaching. It's a meaningful quote that should remind everyone - leaders included - that once you stop learning and evolving, a part of you begins to wither, both professionally and personally. And who wants to do that?
