THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE & WORLD ECONOMY

THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE & WORLD ECONOMY

Malaysia is South-East Asia’s fattest country, where a nationwide food culture is feeding mounting concern over what its health minister calls “an obesity epidemic.”

“We are the most obese nation in South-East Asia, and Malaysians are becoming more and more obese,” says Health Minister Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam, warning of a “crisis in unhealthy behaviour.”

Nearly 45% of Malaysian men and almost half of women are overweight or obese, according to a 2013 study by UK medical journal Lancet, compared to global rates of around 30%.

A recent report by consultants McKinsey Global Institution found obesity now costs the global economy US$2 trillion (approx RM6.7 trillion) in healthcare and lost productivity – or 2.8% of global GDP – just $100 billion less than both smoking and armed conflict. The study warned almost half of the world’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030 and called for a “coordinated response“ from governments, retailers and food and drink manufacturers.

In Malaysia, childhood obesity rates also are climbing, from less than 10% a decade ago to nearly 14% in 2008, according to the most recent figures, saddling health systems with a new generation of diabetes, hypertension and other obesity-related illnesses

Already, some 2.6 million adults have diabetes, a figure authorities expect to spike to 4.5 million in 2020. Malaysia has a population of around 29 million.

Stevia Plantation projects are the future plantation in Malaysia. This is the project that will solve the problems of health, raise the economic level of farmers and the country at the same time. The cost of the project will breakeven in 3 years and the plants can last up to 6 years per crop.

The market for all-natural, low-calorie stevia sweeteners is expanding rapidly. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates stevia intake could eventually replace 20-30% of all dietary sweeteners. The total global sweetener market was estimated at US$58.3 billion in 2010.

Diabetes patients must have spent sleepless nights thinking of newer ways of cutting down extra sugar. Out of shape dreams have given you many a nightmare. The Malaysian plans to increase the monthly income of the farmers to RM4,000 per month by the year 2020, when Malaysia will be a developed country. But so far all the farming plans cannot even touch RM2,000 per month per farmer family. Even the oil palm planting cannot reach this target set.

Although it is a new plant in the country, Stevia has been grown in some countries such as Canada, Australia, South America, China, India, Taiwan, Korea and Thailand. In Japan, its use has increased to 50 percent and today's stevia market dealings involving over RM1.9 billion.

Stevia approved by the Generally Recognized As Safe and America Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 17, 2008.

Cultivation of stevia can help alleviate poverty for single mothers and unemployed graduates. Expected in 2015, the world will make a profit of RM 63 billion as a result of the cultivation of Stevia as an alternative to replace sugar.

It can not only replace the use of sugar in drinks and food, but will be a source of revenue to improve the people's economy, thus removing them from the shackles of poverty.

Stevia does not need a large area to work on this plant, because it can be grown in your backyard. Stevia plants in one acre can produce 1 tonne of dry leaves that can be sold to RM5,000 for a harvest. In one acre can be harvested nine to ten times a year.

Malaysian Youth are urged to tap a Career in Stevia Plantation. School leavers and Institutions of Higher Education as well as job seekers are encouraged to pursue a career in the plantation commodities, said Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Datuk Hamzah Zainudin, Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) agency under the supervision of MPIC MPOB, Malaysian Rubber Board, Malaysian Cocoa Board, National Kenaf and Tobacco Board, Malaysian Timber Industry Board and the Malaysian Pepper Board.
