The Future of Grinchy Speakers, According to (this) Expert

The Future of Grinchy Speakers, According to (this) Expert

It must be December if I'm finding ways to be Grinchy about nice things.

Every day, my friend and speaker, runway model and inclusion warrior Bean Gill shares on her social story 3 things for which she is grateful.

While gratitude is not a new or particularly unique concept, for someone who 10 years ago suddenly lost the use of her legs to a virus , it's a critical one.

A regular Gratitude Practice supports her mental health by keeping her eyes firmly fixed on what she *does* have, not what she has lost.

I can tell you that my little Canadian Cindy Lou Hou doesn't take much for granted, and it shows in her unstoppable optimism.

She’s always searching for ways in which she can be creatively grateful.

Of course Grinchy McManager over here couldn't resist finding the rain cloud in this silver lining.

In the spirit of 'professional development' [eye roll], allow me rain on your Christmas parade.

Gratitude doesn’t come naturally, and dramatic humbling often precedes it.

A Christmas Carol (1938)

Think Scrooge, the Grinch's less green counterpart, throwing open the windows and gifting a goose after learning from the 3 Spirits that he’s been a turd his whole adult life.

He had a lot to learn, and he was very grateful to now know what he didn’t know.

Emerging speakers don’t know what they don’t know, and speakers who stay in you don't know what you don't know territory tend to languish there.

At its core, this is a curiosity problem.

Scrooge wasn’t one bit curious about why people hated him. Curiosity was imposed on him via dramatic paranormal humbling.

The Grinch's dark origin story is largely unknown, but anybody who eats onions like apples must have a doozie. If it weren't for Cindy Lou Who's 11 out of 10 cuteness and curiosity, his 3-sizes too small heart would have stayed that way.

We humans are most curious in the beginning of things. This is a common trait noticeable in emerging speakers.

The start-up fresh-adventure updating-LinkedIn-with-a new-career dopamine wears off pretty quick and reality settles like a big ole' wet blanket.

A couple of articles have popped into my feed lately, highlighting the (probably obvious) need for curiosity to grow.

"If you don't have any knowledge, then you can't be curious about things. So you need knowledge to build on to be curious, and curiosity needs knowledge to grow on."*

Consider for a moment the curious speaker. They are driven to learn more, explore, reveal.

Benveet Bean Gill in new CBC factual series Push

Curious speakers PUSH (which is a shameless plug for See Agency speaker Bean Gill 's new original unscripted factual series called Push premiering?Friday, February 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBC TV and CBC Gem).

Curious speakers desire a better knowledge of their craft and career. They challenge their beliefs about what they know.

And in so doing, they recognize what they have already learned and how far they've come.

The curious speaker is grateful for what they've learned, which fuels their curiosity to learn more.

2023 for me is going to be one big, long curiosity crusade on behalf of myself and my speakers.

Hashtag GRATITUDE, y'all. Let's PUSH for it!
