As more intense and visually attractive sports like cricket, football, tennis, badminton, kabaddi, etc., grasp the attention of the Indian audience, Golf is a sport that is known to be enjoyed by the stereotypical upper stratum individuals as their leisure activity. It is a sport that is lurking in the background for years now in India.

Though this sport is not on every Indian's favorite list, yet the Indian society has not failed in bringing out world-class golf players, whose achievements have assisted in the growth of the sport in the country.

Golf was introduced in India by the British empire, much like the other popular sports. In 1829, the first golfing establishment, The Royal Calcutta Golf Club, was established in the east Indian metropolis. This establishment shows the age of Golf as a professional sport in India. It was 22 years later that the world saw a shift from Golf as a gentlemen’s game, to Golf as a competitive sport.

Golf is no longer known as a sport of the rich, for the rich or by the rich. It is no longer restricted to the tycoons and Corporate giants, as the networking is far more open today. It has opened its doors for the middle-class because of the ascent in sponsored events by the leading Indian and multinational brands. These events promote young talents and bring out the best in them.

Golfing culture in India is growing vastly, but we must take advantage of our rapidly increasing resources if the nation wants to imprint its name in the sport’s history books.
