Have you ever thought about what it really takes to lead in today’s unpredictable world? Brené Brown’s phrase, "strong spine, soft front," beautifully sums it up. But it’s not just a catchy expression—it’s a challenge. Do you, as a leader, maintain this balance?
A strong spine is about standing firm in your values and making tough calls when needed. But a soft front? That’s where you show your humanity. It’s about the courage to be vulnerable and to connect with your team on a genuine level.
Leaders who master this balance create cultures where trust, collaboration, and innovation thrive. By embracing vulnerability, you build an environment where open communication isn’t just welcomed—it’s the norm. And this, in turn, strengthens a team that’s not only cohesive but also resilient in the face of change.
Resilience: Bouncing Forward with a Strong Spine and a Soft Front
Resilience isn’t about merely enduring the hard times—it’s about learning, adapting, and moving forward stronger than before. A leader with a strong spine stays grounded during challenges, guiding the team with determination. But beware of rigidity—it can be your downfall when adaptability is what’s needed most.
A soft front allows you to connect deeply with your team, showing them that you genuinely care. This connection creates a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and ready to tackle challenges together.
Balancing these qualities—strength with vulnerability—creates a leadership style that’s resilient and forward-thinking.
Three Steps to Develop Your 'Strong Spine, Soft Front' Leadership Style
?? Boost Self-Awareness:
Start by understanding yourself better. Reflect on your leadership style, seek honest feedback, and be willing to adjust. This self-awareness helps you stand firm in your values while staying open to others’ perspectives.
?? Cultivate Empathetic Communication:

Great leaders listen more than they talk. Ensure your communication is filled with empathy. Listen to your team’s concerns, validate their feelings, and encourage open conversations. This builds trust and strengthens your team’s commitment to shared goals.
?? Sharpen Your Decision-Making:
Decision-making is central to a strong spine. Practice making confident choices, even when information is incomplete. But always stay open to feedback and be willing to pivot if necessary. This blend of decisiveness and flexibility will earn your team’s trust.
So, do you have a strong spine and a soft front? In today’s ever-changing business environment, this isn’t just a nice-to-have - it’s essential. Leaders who blend strength with vulnerability not only build resilient teams but also foster the human connections that drive success. As our workplaces continue to evolve, those who master this balance won’t just get by - they’ll excel.

6 个月Brilliant article Heidi Dening - Keynote Speaker and Author and love this quote from Brene Brown which I first came across in her book Braving the Wilderness back in 2017. She picked it up from a speaker sharing how it’s part of Buddhist teachings. She also adds ‘Wild Heart’ to make it a trinity - living out the paradoxes in our lives. Ability to be tough and tender, excited and scared, brave and afraid. All which you no doubt cover in your program ??

6 个月Love this quote “Balancing these qualities—strength with vulnerability—creates a leadership style that’s resilient and forward-thinking.” It takes bravery to be vulnerable and it takes hard work on creating cultures where this is ok too. The more we do it, the more we build cultures where others can too
