FUTURE FITNESS: WHERE WILL THE FITNESS INDUSTRY BE IN THE YEAR 2030 (and how you can get there first).
This is a bit of fun!
I wrote this on the 2nd of April 2011 - YES - 2011.
In 2011, I submitted it to a leading national fitness industry representative organization for consideration of publication in their magazine.
The editor replied...."Dear Wayne. Thank you for your article. We feel your article is unsuitable for our magazine as it is a little far-fetched and unrealistic for our readers".
I decided to publish this now because I keep hearing people tell me "we want outside the box thinking Wayne" and "we want to break new ground - be creative - be innovative".
Then when you tell them something that's outside the box, new, creative and innovative - they reject it.
Bottom line is my friends - the future is forged by those who are bold enough to see it - to believe in it and to work towards making it a reality.
Just smile and wave boys....just smile and wave....
The 2011 article begins here.................
It’s Monday night, August 27th, 2030.
The working day is over. It’s 6 pm. Time to head off to the gym for a workout.?
You arrive at the gym and walk towards the doors excited about the prospects of an hour of fitness and fun.
A retinal scan has replaced those old gym cards and access passes, so you blink at the monitor and keep walking on through to the gym’s fitness facilities.
As you walk into the warm up area and step up to a treadmill, the gym’s FITNESS INTEGRATED TRACKING system (or F.I.T system) recognises you, remembers your last workout settings and commences your workout program automatically. The treadmill detects any weight gain or loss since your last workout and F.I.T. system sensors on the treadmill scan your body for signs of fatigue, stress, muscle tension, body temperature and illness and adjust your workout accordingly. (REMEMBER - I wrote this in 2011).
After your warm up, you head to your exercise class where the F.I.T. system scanning and tracking equipment is monitoring your every move calculating your total workload, heart rate, sweating rate, breathing rate, oxygen consumption, energy expenditure, kilojoules burn rate and fat loss. All these details are recorded instantaneously on the gym’s central computer and automatically sent to your smart-phone so you can check it out later. Your robot instructor AEROBIC (Automated, Electronic Robot Offering Bodies’ Intensive Classes) also detects your heart rate and oxygen use and provides several beeps and bleats of encouragement and motivation.
The F.I.T. system then calculates the impact of tonight’s workout on your fitness goals and weight loss targets and interfaces with your smart-fridge at home, pushing the right foods and drinks towards the front of the fridge to help you make the right eating choices when you get home.
As you walk towards the showers, the F.I.T. system has already calculated the amount of fluid you need to rehydrate and is directing you towards your personal changing cubicle where your re-hydration bottle containing the ideal combination of electrolytes, carbs and aminos is waiting.
The shower door opens automatically and without touching a tap the water temperature is adjusted to your personal preferences based on your pre-determined, individualised optimal recovery settings. The smart-multi-head shower then varies water temperature, flow direction and flow rate and gives your tired muscles a hydrotherapy treatment to help your recovery.
Your favourite music starts to play in background through the shower’s personalised audio system and the F.I.T. system synchronises the release a mixture of fragrant oils and scents into the air to provide you with an individualised aromatherapy treatment to help you to relax, regenerate and recover.
Welcome to FUTURE-FIT 2030 – THE Gym of the Future!!!!!
The future of fitness is about "I"......
? I-Individualised: Every service industry from education to eating, from movies to music and from fun to fitness is shifting towards a tailored, individualised, targeted, personalised approach;
? I-Integrated: The biggest growth area in communication technology in recent years has been in social media and inter-connecting the world. People want connectedness between all the different aspects of their life to save time, save money and to minimise inconvenience;
? I-Immediate: People have limited time and are looking for E.E.E. – Effective Efficient Exercise.?People want to achieve more with less;
? I-Interactive: People are demanding more engagement and interaction from their gadgets, gizmos and gimmicks;
? I-Internet: And we know that the world has gone and will continue to go digital. Anyone can access anything, anytime, anywhere and mostly for free. Computing power, memory and connectivity through the net is growing at an alarming (but exciting) rate;

? I-Inter-city, inter-state and international: People are constantly on the move for work, for lifestyle, for recreation, for study, for love....it’s an inter-changeable lifestyle and people want to be able to take their lifestyle – including their fitness choices with them where-ever and whenever they go.
So what does all that mean to you as a fitness industry professional? How does knowing that stuff help you improve your business performance and enhance the potential for the success of your fitness business?
It means everything.
The fitness fan of the future will demand faster results, better results and easier results.
They will demand programs and plans to be highly personalised, individualised and tailored not just for their fitness goals but to be an integrated part of their overall lifestyle.
They will demand information about their progress immediately – and to have access to that information anywhere, anytime.
They will demand a totally portable fitness lifestyle support program – wherever in the world they go, whatever the time of day or night, their program, their plan and information about their progress will need to be easily available and seamlessly integrated into whatever fitness choice they decide to make.
So how can you take this knowledge and use it to enhance the performance of your fitness business?
Become a fitness industry leader!
There are three types of fitness industry business owners:
The first type, let’s call them the FAILURES,?open their doors and offers the same programs, the same ideas, the training systems, the same equipment choices, the same routines year after year after year. They never listen to or respond to the needs of their clients. They think they know what’s good for their clients and don’t know or care what their clients actually want. “They can always go somewhere else to train and keep fit if they don’t like what we offer”.?
The second type, the FOLLOWERS, wait for the latest news, ideas, tips and hints on fitness systems, equipment and training programs from overseas and copy them. They don’t listen to their clients: they are too busy pushing the latest fitness fad from overseas regardless of their clients’ actual needs. They tell the clients what they want, rather than asking them what they need.
The third type – the FUTURE – listen to their clients and their needs. They openly invite clients to suggest ideas and make recommendations for how the business can improve. They get to know their clients personally and create unique, tailored fitness solutions and training services which meet each client’s individual needs.
The future is about the individual – so tailoring your fitness solutions to the needs of each individual client is your pathway to the future.
By adopting a client focused business philosophy and by listening to and responding to the needs of your clients, you are not only guaranteeing the sustainable success of your business, you are forging the future for the fitness industry.
Failure, Follower or the fitness industry professional of the Future....success is your choice.
Summary:
1. They call it a VISION because it requires you to see it clearly!
2. The successful fitness professionals of 2030 will see the future clearly and take a short cut to get to it – they will create the fitness industry of tomorrow – today;
3. The future is very much about unique, tailored, individualised fitness solutions for each and every client.?The only difference between adopting and living a client focused business now and 2030 is that the technology of 2030 will be a little faster and a lot more integrated. But the client focused philosophy is the critical element of success in 2010 – do it now;
4. Remember the 1990s? Remember the music? The hairstyles? The fashion? And remember the way people exercised, trained and got fit 20 years ago? 2030 is closer to you now that 1990 – the future of fitness is already here.
