The future of finding lost hikers, look up!!!

One of the things that I have projected and predicted in the past year is already starting to appear. It is the use of Drones and Drone technology in the location of and rescuing of hikers, and other people lost away from civilization. Some sheriff and police departments, as well as fire departments, are now using Drones to find people that have lost their way. I suspect as we head into the next year, there are some additions to this capability that will continue to expand the impact of the drones.

The first is the exceptional FLIR systems that connect to the bottom of the drone and allow the drone to return IR images. Human beings put out warmth and therefore show up at night on an infrared camera. I have a standalone FLIR camera and one for my iPhone. The ability to wander your house and find cold spots is valuable. The ability to continue searching for a lost child after the sun goes down using drones is something that in the future we will not even think about. Why? Because it just makes sense.

The last piece today is the concept of AR, in particular using AR to overlay a grid map for a specific area, merging the direct video feeds of human and drone searchers. This would allow the main team is coordinating the searches to quickly see where there is overlap in search patterns and where they are missing. The humans can only traverse a small amount of territory. The drones can cover a lot more plus leaving the cameras on while the drones are flying, increases the possibility of seeing things that were missed.

In the future, I suspect this will be the standard response to a lost human being. Where ten humans can cover an acre in 3 or so hours, ten drones can cover that same territory in less than 10 minutes. Add the FLIR Infrared camera, and you have much more information about what is really below you. The future of dining lost people may be above us.

Certainly. There's also the application of searching for lost children or pets.
