The Future of Filmmaking Is Here. Wait, is it? My Wild Ride with the AI Dream Machine

This is how it started, there I was, laying in bed, trying to avoid another rabbit hole of random YouTube videos when it hit me: "Dream Machine, the new AI model that makes SORA from OpenAI feel like Paint 98." I had to try it and write a review, right?

I started my filmmaking journey in Chile. It was 2004 (Yes I went to film school 20 years ago), and HD cameras were just a dream for a broke film student like me. Editing was a nightmare of blue-colored iMacs and Final Cut Pro 3. I battled FireWire cables, digitized video from a Canon XL1, and begged for free filming locations. My actors? Let’s just say they weren’t Oscar material. All those struggles made me who I am, but now, they’re wiped out by tech -The struggles, not the bad actors, maybe both who knows…

Welcome to the Candy Store

Enter Dream Machine, LumaLab's new AI video generator. This isn’t a minor upgrade; it’s a massive improvement. Logging in felt like being a kid in a candy store—everything was clean and simple. Options were clear: text to video, image to video, and a checkbox for "enhanced prompts."

So, I tested SORA’s prompt for this? comparison: "A young man in his 20s sits on a cloud, reading a book." Then, another one: "A stylish woman walks down a Tokyo street filled with neon lights." The results were very good, especially if you realized these videos are being made in no time and the prompts are one line sentences! Oh man, I went to Film school 20 years too early I knew it!

For sure this tool can’t replace real live action videos (yet) but then, it is addictive crazy how easy everything becomes! I could generate a storyboard for a short animation film, using Midjourney or Leonardo App, then put each scene in this tool and tadam, shortfilm in no time spending not even one dollar.

Pro Tips and Silly Fun

A neat trick? Making longer videos by stitching clips together. I created a 10-second video this way. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked with some tweaking.

The only downside is that because it became so stratospherically popular, now the video takes way too long to be created as they go on a queue. I guess there are just too many people like me trying to become popular on LinkedIn by reviewing someone else’s invention.

Reflecting on my journey from 2004 to now, the transformation is mind-blowing. Back then, outdated tech and logistical headaches were the norm. Today, tools like Dream Machine make high-quality video creation a breeze. Whether you’re a pro or just starting, this AI opens up endless creative possibilities, imagine what will happen when we cannot identify AI generated videos from reality.?

The future of video creation is here. It’s exciting, fun, and easy to use. But will it kill creativity? Who knows? Maybe, maybe not. Give it a try, and see what amazing things you’ll create next.
