The Future is Feminine

I reproduce the words of a fantastic blog post written by Carmen Pombo that I think deserves close attention and the widest possible audience!

Carmen wrote;

"On Women's Day I think especially of the most vulnerable, invisible and harmed by society. By a large majority, these are women.

I am especially thinking of victims of trafficking who are forced into prostitution and who live under threat, abuse and without dignity. I think of the mothers who suffer gender violence, and who day after day take their children forward through thick and thin. 

I think of those girls who are forced to marry to save their family's finances, who have their childhoods forcibly stolen, turning them into women before their time. I think of the burden of menstruation in remote rural communities, where hygiene conditions are conspicuous by their absence. I think of pregnancies and deliveries with complications in poverty, where the fabulous gift of new life becomes the harsh reality of survival.

I think of all the difficulties these women have in asserting their rights and in getting equal opportunities.

But they fight, work, smile and raise families. Women don't give up. And justice should be on their side too.

I trust in the value and power of the rule of law. For this reason, a decade ago, I decided to dedicate my life to improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable through the medium of the law. In this way, through the Fernando Pombo Foundation, we work to eliminate legal barriers to the advancement and protection of women.

Today I make a toast to women. The future is feminine!"
