?To meet the ambitions for growth in national salmon production towards 2030, we have calculated that we will need a feed volume growth of ~ 1 million tonnes. To meet the needs, we have to utilize new resources.

What's so great about blue mussels??
The blue mussel has many qualities that can make it an interesting feed ingredient for poultry, pigs, and salmon. For instance, mussel farming has a confirmed positive effect on marine environments.??
You probably know that the blue mussel is very common in Nordic seawaters, but did you know that it is part of the ocean`s cleaning staff? By eating phytoplankton and absorbing nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus, the blue mussel works as a natural cleaning machine. Because of this characteristic, our neighbour Denmark, use farmed mussels to capture agricultural residuals.?Wow!

Putting sustainable feed on the agenda?
Right now, increased supply of sustainable raw materials for feed are the biggest single bottleneck to be solved in the seafood industry to meet expected growth.?
The good news is that the government recently highlighted sustainable feed as one of two public missions going forward.
Our Managing Director Nina Stangeland welcomes the proposal.

What`s on tomorrow's menu for salmon??
Today, feed for farmed salmon mainly consists of plant-based resources, with soy being the dominant ingredient. Tomorrow, it is likely that the feed will consist of a portfolio of novel and existing ingredients.?
In the future, raw material from marine species, farmed organisms and underutilized resources may be used as ingredients. It might include mesopelagic fish, insects, microalgae, and by-products, among others.?

11 million in funds to test blue mussels in chicken feed
4 clusters and 6 industry partners from different sectors are gathering their muscles to test blue mussels as a feed ingredient for poultry.?
The idea is that blue mussel can replace imported protein like soy, and other ingredients. By doing that, the project called BlueMusselFeed, aims to contribute to increased self-sufficiency in Norwegian feed production.?
It looks like collaboration matters, because the project has received 11 million in funding from the Research Council of Norway!?
