The Future of Fashion Photography is AI

Fashion photography has always pushed boundaries. In the early 20th century, advances in camera technology allowed photographers to capture crisp images and experiment with dynamic poses. Photographers like Edward Steichen pioneered artistic fashion photography and elevated it to an artform.

In the 1960s and 70s, Richard Avedon and Irving Penn revolutionized the look and feel of fashion magazines. They popularized the outdoor fashion shoot and turned models into celebrities. Their striking images became iconic visual symbols of their era.

Today, AI promises to once again reshape fashion photography. AI is already being used behind the scenes to streamline workflow. Algorithms can tag images, allowing for quick search and retrieval in large databases. They can also color correct batches of photos with one click.

But more disruptive changes are coming. AI will automate the post-production process. Tedious tasks like selecting the best shots, adjusting tones, and retouching models will be handled by algorithms. This will free up photographers to focus purely on the creative aspects.

More advanced generative adversarial networks (GANs) can synthesise completely new fashion photos. These neural networks can generate photorealistic models wearing designer clothing. The models can be placed in exotic locations that may be difficult or costly to access in real life.

Brands like Balmain have already experimented with using GANs to create catalog images. The results were stunning and months faster than shooting real models. As the technology improves, generated models will become indistinguishable from humans.

GANs also raise interesting ethical questions around copyright and ownership. If a GAN creates a high fashion image, who owns it? The programmer who designed the network? The photographer who art directed it? Or the AI agent itself? New legal frameworks may need to be developed.

But the true creative power of AI will be realized when humans directly collaborate with generative networks. Photographers could provide sketches of their vision, and let the GAN fill in the nitty gritty photographic details. This will amplify human imagination.

The end result will be fashion photography that is more creative, visionary, and diverse. shooting restrictions like budgets, logistics, and human limitations will fade away. Plus, AI models don't have biases, so generated imagery will better represent people of all ethnicities, sizes, gender identities, and ages.

In the future, anyone with a computer and internet connection will have access to cutting-edge fashion photography. GANs will democratize high fashion and give creative control to the masses. Both amateurs and seasoned professionals will use AI to actualize their wildest photographic fantasies.

The age of AI fashion photography has arrived. The possibilities are endless. Let your imagination run wild

Really interesting. I have just given a talk on the same subject earlier this week at the FLOW event in London. I was followed directly by an IP Lawer. Both might be useful if this is your kind of thing?
