Why use duplex stainless steel
In recent years, more valve and pump manufacturers have applied duplex and super duplex stainless steel in the manufacture of valves and pumps, or have increased the proportion of materials used. Valve manufacturers?that can provide these material?products, such as Emerson, Flowserve, GEMü, Kitz, KSB, Metso, Parker Hannifi, Sitecna and Victaulic, etc. Pump manufacturers include Cornell Pump, Goulds pumps (ITT) , Grundfos, KSB, Pioneer Pump, PSG, Sulzer and Torishima?and so on.?Most companies select materials for valves and pumps based on the degree of corrosion of the medium. The materials mainly include: ordinary austenite, 6Mo alloy, Monel alloy, Hastelloy, duplex and super duplex stainless steel.
There are several reasons to use duplex or super duplex stainless steel to manufacture MAX pressure rating valves and pumps:
1) Corrosion resistance.
Duplex stainless steel has better resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion than ordinary austenitic stainless steel, and is less expensive than nickel-based alloys and superalloys, making it the most ideal material for marine environments and the desalination industry.
2) High hardness and corrosion resistance.
Duplex stainless steel can withstand the erosion of sawdust, coarse sand, mud, sand and other corrosive media, and has good wear resistance, and can be used in ore mining, wastewater treatment and papermaking industries.
3) Compactness.
Due to its higher strength-to-weight ratio (ratio of strength and weight), compared with ordinary steel types, duplex stainless steel can make valves and pumps have thinner walls and occupy less space. When space is limited , which is a big advantage. This means that smaller pumps and valves made of duplex stainless steel can replace larger pumps and valves made of other materials and achieve the same transmission power. Or a more powerful duplex stainless steel pump can be used to replace an older model during a retrofit.
