What is building integrated photovoltaic or BIPV system?
BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) is a system that utilizes special types of solar cells to convert solar energy into electrical energy for household use. BIPV is an upgraded form of traditional solar panels and systems that can generate electricity on-site using solar energy.
The concept behind the invention of BIPV system is an environmentally friendly technology that integrates solar panels into building envelope structures and generates the required electricity from solar energy.
The difference between BIPV and traditional solar energy systems is that traditional solar panels can only be installed on the roofs and terraces of buildings/houses, while building integrated solar panels can be installed on building envelope structures such as roofs, skylights, and exterior walls.
Photovoltaic building integration first became popular commercially in the 1990s and quickly replaced traditional photovoltaic or solar systems. Photovoltaic systems (PV systems) were considered ineffective in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Later, many improvisations were made in this technology to make it effective, and most of these technological advancements not only made the system efficient, but also brought much-needed cost-effectiveness.

Over time, integrated photovoltaic systems have become popular due to their effectiveness, efficiency in converting more solar energy into electricity, and relatively low cost.
As BIPV is also considered a multifunctional product, it quickly became a highly sought after building material that can replace traditional exterior cladding materials such as glass. BIPV also provides excellent aesthetic effects, similar to architectural glass, while also serving as an energy generation unit.
How does the building integrated photovoltaic system work?
The working principle of BIPV is similar to traditional solar panels, as they both have a similar concept of generating electricity from solar energy. The sunlight falling on the BIPV panel is absorbed by them. The efficiency of BIPV solar panels depends on the type of panel.
The solar rays absorbed by the panel are sent to the inverter. An inverter is a device that converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). Once direct current is converted into alternating current, it will be sent to the power grid.
Now from the power grid, current or electrical energy is available for use. The entire building derives its power from there. All components of BIPV are connected using wires and cables of the required specifications.
