The Future is... Democratised Digital Learning Content Creation

Infographic No2 - Fosway Digital Learning Realities Survey 2024-25

What's this week's headline?

L&D spend is under close scrutiny. The pressure is on for L&D to do more with less, or the same. AI generated learning content and subject matter expert developed content are the focus for investment in 2024-25 & that has huge implications for e-learning content providers!

A week has passed in the blink of an eye, and we are into the second in our series of five infographics exploring the realities of corporate learning this time focused on L&D Budgets and Investment Trends in 2024-25.

How are L&D budgets fairing?

Whilst not quite the grim reading of last year, what’s clear is that L&D teams and their spend continue to be under financial scrutiny.?

Only 29% expect their overall L&D Budget to increase this year and around 36% have delayed or stopped investment in new learning technology projects.?

Digital Learning budgets are not booming to the extent that they have in previous years.

Overall, is the economic climate causing you to delay your investment in NEW digital learning projects or solutions in 2024?

So, there are continued pressures on most L&D teams to do more with the same or less!? And this is driving ?some really interesting choices, some of which may make some #digital #learning providers wince.?

Namely in the form of generative AI and subject matter expert generated content.

What's booming for L&D spend on Digital Learning in 2024-25?

AI enabled learning content authoring is the standout focus for the vast majority digital learning teams spend for the year ahead.?

On balance 50% of L&D teams expect to increase their investment in AI authoring.?

That’s compared to a overall swing of minus 7% for those looking to outsource their digital learning team.? Courses created by AI is going to replace e-learning course creation that was previously created by external teams.

AI is here and it is disrupting digital learning.

The trajectory of #AI’s impact on learning content is clear.?

This is especially true when you look at how L&D Teams are looking to resource learning projects in the coming year.? More AI content creation and more upskilling subject matter experts.?

How are you planning to resource L&D projects in the year ahead?

68% plan to resource content development using AI
69% plan to resource learning creation using Subject Matter Experts

You could see these two are separate themes.? AI and SMEs. But I think it's likely these are Siamese Twins. Inextricably joined and indivisible. We are entering a phase of 'democratising' learning content creation, with all the management challenges and learning quality issues of the past.

?And it's cost pressures are behind that movement.

More content doesn't mean better content. But just good enough might be better than none at all. (Possibly).

What are the implications for external learning content providers?

There are two likely scenarios for how this impacts external learning providers. The best case, stagnated L&D budgets just get spent the same as before, and AI and SME generated content is just used to help L&D teams to support projects that they would have otherwise struggle to do. In the worst case scenario, AI and SME content replaces the spend that would have otherwise would have been made on what could be seen as 'entry level e-learning content'.

Either way, the digital learning content market is shifting and buyers will expect more bang for their buck!

65% are expecting a decease in learning content in the year ahead because of AI.

Not embracing AI is not an option - either for L&D teams or external providers.

Do you expect the cost of learning content to decrease because of the increased adoption of AI?
